Description: —Vine moderately to densely pubescent. Stem triangular to subcylindrical, striate. Stipules 0.15–0.7 cm long, linear-triangulate/subulate to falcate. Leaves with petioles 0.9–3.7 cm long, glands absent; blades chartaceous, 2 or 3-lobed to the apex, 1.5–9.8 × 1.3–10 cm, obtriangular, divergent angle 35º–80º, apex acute, obtuse or rounded, apiculate, base acute, obtuse, rounded or subcordate, margin entire, presence of ocelli, adaxial surface glabrous to puberulous, abaxial surface densely puberulous to densely pubescent. Flowers solitary or in pairs, pedunculate; peduncles 1.2–2.5 cm long. Bracts 0.2–0.6 cm long, linear-triangulate to subulate. Flowers 2.5–3.5 cm diam.; pedicels 0.1–0.4 cm long; sepals oblong-lanceolate, 1–1.7 × 0.2–0.5 cm, apex obtuse; petals oblong-lanceolate, 0.9–1.1 × 0.2–0.4 cm, apex obtuse; corona biseriate, external filaments 0.5–1.2 cm long, filiform, apex acute, internal filaments 0.2–0.7 cm long, filiform, apex capitate; operculum plicate, 0.15–0.2 cm long, margin fimbriate; limen lobulate; androgynophore 0.5–1 cm long; filaments ca. 0.5 cm long, anthers 0.2–0.5 × 0.15–0.2 cm; ovary 0.15–0.35 × 0.1–0.3 cm, ellipsoidal to globose, glabrous, rarely puberulous; fruits 0.7–1.7 x 0.7–1.8 cm, globose to subglobose, glabrous, rarely puberulous; styles 0.4–0.7 cm long. Fruit a berry 0.7–1.7 × 0.7–1.8 cm, globose to subglobose, glabrous. Seeds 0.25–0.4 × 0.1–0.3 cm, ellipsoidal to obovoid, testa with 6–7 transversal grooves.

Comments: —Although Bernacci et al. (2014) mentioned few similarities between P. rupestris and P. pohlii , they stated the following differences: “smaller chartaceous leaves without ocelli, shorter petioles and stipules, much longer inner corona filaments, and a smooth operculum”. Except from the operculum, the other characters are not conservative, presenting wide variation within a species. As such, P. rupestris is recognized here as a synonym of P. pohlii , as it does not have distinct diagnostic characteristics, and all of its characteristics are within the range of variation of the latter species ( Table 1 View TABLE 1 ).
