Type material (lost). Holotype, male, China: Jiangsu Province, Nanking, Ning-Kuo Temple , 4 April, 1923, leg. Chenfu Wu.
Material examined. 18 males and 10 females, Jiangsu Province, Nanjing, Mt. Zijinshan , 18–19 February, 2006, leg. Zhi-Jie Wang ; 1 male and 1 female, same locality, 2 February, 2016, leg. Zhi-Teng Chen, Zhi-Jie Wang ; 41 males and 21 females, same locality, 17 February, 2016, leg. Zhi-Teng Chen, Qin-Bo Huo, Qiu-Yue Huo ; 19 males and 18 females, same locality, 3 March, 2016, leg. Zhi-Teng Chen, Qin-Bo Huo.
Diagnosis. Male. Tergum 9 with posteromedial indentation. Cercus upcurved, inner part membranous with a rounded apex, outer margin sclerotized with an incurved, large apical spine. Epiproct oval, dorsal sclerite with a pair of lateral sclerites and medially crossed grooves; ventral sclerite with a row of spines; lateral knob not obvious. Paraproct bilobed, inner lobe small and strongly sclerotized; outer lobe broad basally, inner and outer margin each with a spine, apex finger-shaped and slightly curved ( Figs. 11–14 View FIGURES 11 – 16 , 17 View FIGURES 17 – 18 ).
Female. Sterna 2–4 each with a pair of small sclerites anteriorly. Sterna 4–6 each with a pair of medial spots. Sternum 6 with a sclerotized patch posteromedially. Pregenital plate on sternum 7 rounded and strongly sclerotized, reaching anterior margin of sternum 9 ( Figs. 15–16 View FIGURES 11 – 16 , 18 View FIGURES 17 – 18 ).
Distribution. China (Jiangsu Province).
Remarks. The holotype and paratypes of N. nankinensis were originally deposited in the Yenching University insect collection but lost during warfare ( Wu 1962). The supplementary illustrations for N. nankinensis were taken from a several mating pairs ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 ). These specimens were collected from a small stream on the 447 m high Purple Mountain or Mount Zijin Shan on the eastern side of Nanjing in Jiangsu Province, China, where the ‘Ning- Kuo Temple’ is located. Two additional stonefly species are also known from Mount Zijin Shan, Amphinemura sinensis ( Wu, 1926) and Capnia s.l. zijinshana Du & Chen, 2016.
