Pic (1921: 10), originally in Eurypinus .
Pic (1924: 22).
Synonymy and new combination by Pollock (2005: 252).
Type material studied, Eurypinus elongatus and Falsopedilus modestus . Eurypinus elongatus , syntype 1 ♀ MNHN: Dunbrody 9/11/01 [handwritten] // Afr. ausale [handwritten] // type [handwritten] // TYPE [printed, label red] // Museum Paris Coll. M. Redescription. ♁ holotype F. modestus . Dorsum dark brown, anterior head, base of pronotum, elytral suture rufous brown. Antenna and legs brown. Body elongate, flattened dorso-ventrally. Head subopaque, anterior part slightly inclined. Frons narrow, strongly narrows anteriad, about 0.4× as wide as dorsal eye length. Compound eye very large, hemispherical, occupying whole head side, very strongly protruding from lateral and dorsal outline of head, shortly notched at anterior margin, touching insertion of antenna. Tempus not present. Head dorsal punctures coarse and dense. Antenna long, extending beyond metacoxal cavity when directed posteriad. Antennomere two shorter than basal antennomere, less wide. Antennomere three 2–2.3× as long as antennomere two, with a distinct distal tooth.Antennomeres 4–10 strongly pectinate, each with variably long lobe, of which lobe of antennomere four is the shortest, but every lobe is shorter than corresponding antennomere. Terminal antennomere about 1.2× as long as penultimate antennomere, apically rounded, clavate-shaped. Pronotum about as long as to slightly longer than wide, much narrower than head across compound eyes, subquadrate, flattened in dorsal aspect.Anterior and posterior margin broadly rounded to subtruncate. Lateral pronotal margins subparallel to vaguely emarginate. Pronotal dorsal punctures dense. Pronotal dorsal setation moderately long, nearly appressed. Scutellar shield semicircular. Elytron elongate, slightly glossy, dorsally flattened, parallel-sided. Apicoventral binding patch present, elongate elliptical, convex, glossy. Elytral dorsal punctures generally larger than those on forebody. Legs long, slender. ♁ basal metatarsomere about as long as combined length of remaining metatarsomeres. Genital organs as in Figure 2B, F View FIGURE 2 .
Sexual dimorphism. ♀ holotype of F. elongatus . Dorsum brown to rufous brown, paler on anterior head, pronotum and along elytral suture. Compound eye much smaller than that of ♁, strongly protruding from lateral and dorsal outline of head. Frons moderately broad, about as wide as dorsal eye length, moderately strongly narrows anteriad. Tempus short, converging towards head base. Antenna extending beyond mesocoxal cavity when directed posteriad. Antennomeres 4–10 slightly to moderately serrate. Terminal antennomere about 1.2× as long as penultimate antennomere, apically rounded, clavate-shaped. Pronotum vaguely emarginate at lateral margins prebasally. Elytral apicoventral binding patch present, elongate elliptical, convex, glossy. ♀ basal metatarsomere somewhat shorter than combined length of remaining metatarsomeres. Ovipositor as in Figure 2M View FIGURE 2 .
Ecology. Unknown.
Distribution. South Africa.
