sp. nov.

Lymantes fowleri Anderson , new species ( Figs. 10–11 View Figs , 17 View Figs , 22 View Figs )

Diagnosis. Eyes present as small curved row of 2–3 individually indistinct facets on slight ocular swelling ( Fig. 17 View Figs ). Punctures of body generally moderately large, widely spaced, those of pronotal disc moderately deep, moderately large, widely spaced, the distance between punctures at least one-half diameter of a puncture or more ( Fig. 11 View Figs ). Punctures of striae of elytral disc moderately large, deep and linearly arranged, interstriae distinct, about as wide as a strial puncture ( Fig. 11 View Figs ). Dorsal vestiture indistinct, minute and very fine, each seta much shorter than diameter of elytral strial puncture ( Fig. 10 View Figs ). Legs moderately long, not spindly, hind femora about 5X as long as wide, apex reaching to suture between ventrites 2 and 3. Aedeagus as in Fig. 22 View Figs .

Description. Male, length 2.5–3.0 mm, width 1.1–1.3 mm. Color medium orange to red brown throughout. Head globose, minutely finely reticulate. Eyes present as small curved row of 2–3 individually indistinct facets on slight ocular swelling. Rostrum with antennae inserted slightly beyond apical 1/3 of length, slightly wider in dorsal view beyond antennae insertion, scrobes narrowly visible at point of antennal insertion in dorsal view. Rostrum about 0.7X length of pronotum, slightly arcuate in lateral view, dorsally moderately deeply, moderately densely linearly punctate, punctures separated by less than their own diameter, row of punctures above scrobe coalescent, forming shallow groove. Ventrally irregularly punctate, most punctures coalescent, with median posterior extension represented by narrowly separated lateral cariniform ridges, extended to base of rostrum. Antennae with scape almost reaching base of rostrum, funicle with articles 1 and 2 elongate, subequal in length, articles 3–6 subquadrate, article 7 wider than longand wider towards apex. Pronotum with width about 0.8X length, lateral margins slightly arcuate, widest at about midlength, subapical constriction not evident dorsally, distinctly impressed laterally, disc with punctures moderately deep, moderately large, widely spaced, the distance between punctures at least one-half diameter of a puncture or more, each puncture with minute, fine erect seta. Elytra about 1.8X as long as wide, lateral margins subparallel from behind humeri to apical 1/4, humeri not pronounced, disc with striae with large, deep and linearly arranged punctures numbering 15–20 per complete discal stria, interstriae very finely punctate, shining, narrower than width of a strial puncture, punctures each with fine, minute erect seta, each seta much shorter than diameter of elytral strial puncture. Striae 1–6 complete to base, 7 and 8 fused opposite metacoxae, not continuous to base, stria 10 terminated opposite metacoxa. Venter deeply, moderately densely, regularly punctate, punctures well-spaced, except punctures lacking on ventrites 3 and 4 and slightly larger on ventrite 5. Abdominal ventrites 1 and 2 very long, 1 longer than ventrites 3–5 combined, 2 about as long as ventrites 3 and 4 combined, ventrites 3 and 4 very short, subequal in length, ventrite 5 about 1.5X as long as 3 and 4 combined. Legs long and slender, sparsely shallowly punctate, punctures well-spaced,, femora extended to suture between ventrites 2 and 3, about 4X as long as wide, tibiae straight, slender, about ¾ as long at femora. Tarsi slender, ventrally with scattered setae, tarsal claws very small, fine. Aedeagus with pedon short, very slightly longer than wide; with internal sac with extensive internal sclerotization in form of a pair of distal arciform sclerites, basally with “U-shaped” band-like sclerite basal to an irregularly shaped median complex; struts short, about 1.5X length of pedon.

Female differs from male as follows: length 2.5–3.2 mm, width 1.1–1.3 mm. Rostrum with antennae inserted slightly proximad of apical 1/3 of length. Female not dissected.

Derivation of Species Name. I take pleasure in naming this species after country singer Kevin Fowler, of Austin, Texas, the best non-mainstream country music artist out there. Kevin is a resident of the Austin area, an avid outdoorsman, and proud Texan.

Natural History. Specimens were collected in various kinds of leaf litter, often in riparian situations or in moist canyons throughout the Edwards Plateau. Specimens have been collected from November through May.

Distribution. This species is known from central Texas.
