Type: —“C. America, undated, A.J.A. Bonpland & F.W.H.A. von Humboldt 2172 (holotype: B 13272010 digital image!; isotype: P 00660093 digital image!).

Shrub or subshrub 3m high; branches puberulous; internodal stem wings absent. Leaves 3-foliolate, digitate, petioles 3–7 cm long; leaflets elliptic or oblong- elliptic, 3.5–8 × 0.9–2.5 cm, pubescent above and glabrous beneath; stipules 2–8 mm long, subulate, caducous. Inflorescence a raceme, 6–27 cm long, terminal, erect; peduncles 0.5–6.5 cm long. Flowers 10–27, pedicels 5–8 mm long; bracts 5–12 mm long, subulate, curled, caducous; bracteoles 5–7 mm long, subulate, caducous; calyx 7–11 mm long, lobes twice as long as the tube, pubescent; corolla yellow, reddish marked with age; the standard petal 1.3–2.1 × 1.6–2.5 cm; wing petals 1.3–2 cm long; keel petals 1–1.6 cm long, lanate on the upper margin, untwisted; ovary 6–8 mm long, stipitate; style curved. Legumes 3–4 × 0.7–1.5 cm, oblong, puberulous, brown at maturity, ca. 30-seeded; seeds 5 × 4 mm, seed coat orange, brown or red.

Distribution and Ecology: —This taxon is native to Mexico, Central and South America and was introduced in Africa and Madagascar ( Polhill, 1982). Crotalaria micans is widespread in Brazil, occurring in rocky fields, open areas of cerrado vegetation, and near the margins of gallery forests.
