Type genus: Vitrum gen. nov.
The family is distinguished by its glassy, stalked colonies, separately opening zooids with three long rows of stigmata, short abdomina with gonads in the gut loop, a single large larva incubating in a thoracic brood pouch, long inverted tubular larval adhesive organs and a vegetative stolon. It is monotypic, the only species being Vitrum mjoebergi (Hartmeyer, 1919) the type species of the genus.
