Diagnosis. TL = 12.9–13.8 mm; TL-H = 12.2–13.1 mm; MW = 6.8–7.2 mm; pronotum black with lateral margins testaceous; elytron with basal fasciae not confluent with sublateral, longitudinal and yellowish stripes; elytron with sublateral stripes extended to the mid length of elytra, with a subtriangular, postmedial and broad spot ( Fig. 2B View FIGURE 2 ); protarsomere I with a series of spines across the dorsal surface; metatibia with bifid setae curved ventro-basally on posterior surface; median lobe of aedeagus with apex rounded in lateral view ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 4–7 ).
Differential diagnosis. Hydaticus lateralis has the colour pattern of the pronotum and the elytra similar to H. devexus and H. tuyuensis , but can be distinguished from those species by the following combination of characters: elytron with transverse and subbasal yellowish fasciae, often with sublateral, longitudinal and yellowish stripe; elytron with basal and sublateral yellowish stripes not connected, and with a postmedial and broad spot.
Distribution. Prior to this study, Hydaticus lateralis had been recorded from Brazil and French Guiana only (Laporte 1835; Trémouilles 1996). Its range of distribution is now extended to Guyana, Venezuela, Suriname, and Peru ( Fig. 8).
Ecology. Trémouilles (1996) and Benetti & Hamada (2003) reported this species from lowland areas in Brazil. In Panguana, H. lateralis was collected in shaded and shallow rest pools of forest streams and temporary forest pools, packed with decaying leaves and wood ( Fig. 9A, 9B View FIGURE 9 ). Hydaticus lateralis is sympatric and sometimes syntopic with H. panguana sp. nov. and H. subfasciatus . The species is also attracted to light.
