There has been significant confusion as to which species are representatives of the Orellana as evidenced by the species synonymies presented here. Much of the confusion probably begins with two-segmented or three-segmented tarsi being listed as a generic character for Zammara with the erection of the genus (Amyot and Audinet- Serville 1843). Distant (1905b) further confused the issue by stating that there are two tarsomeres in Orellana species , even though he correctly describes the tarsi as threesegmented in the original description of the type species ( Distant 1881b). Distant (1881b) then described Z. brevis , a species with two tarsomeres, as a member of Orellana in the same paper in which the new genus was published. The two genera can be separated by the number of tarsomeres with species of Orellana possessing three tarsomeres whereas species of Zammara possess two.
