Diagnosis (after Lorenzen, 1981, 1994; Platonova & Mokievsky, 1994; Lima et al., 2009; Smol et al., 2014, emended).
Ironidae , Thalassironinae . Cuticle smooth or with transverse striations most obviously visible on the tail and elsewhere. Anterior sensilla papilliform or hardly visible. Amphidial fovea pocket-like, amphidial aperture a transverse slit. Metanemes evident or not. Buccal cavity anteriorly with three solid teeth each split deeply into two. Pharynx with distinct oval to rounded posterior bulb with thickened internal cuticle. Ventral gland and ventral pore present or not mentioned. Males monorchic. Spicules short, weak or strongly sclerotized, often with vela. Midventral precloacal papilla usually present. Females didelphic, amphidelphic, ovaries antidromously reflected. Tail conico-cylindrical, often, but not always, with long terminal tube. Caudal glands and spinneret present or not evident.
