List of Syringolaimus species (valid species in bold)
Most Syringolaimus species are small-sized and morphologically similar without many structural characters to distinguish related species. A few species are excluded here from the list of valid species because of the absence of males and/or incomplete diagnoses impeding recognition of specimens from outside of type localities (see also Platonova & Mokievsky, 1994 and Lima et al., 2009). These species are designated as species inquirendae meaning their validity can be restored after a proper redescription of specimens from type locality. A special case is presented by species described by Bussau (1993) in his PhD thesis, which can be treated as having a status of unpublished work. Furthermore, his paper does not indicate a repository institution where type specimens are be kept. On the other hand, many experts evaluate the work of Bussau as careful and very important, and actually treat species of Bussau (1993) as valid, although they were never formally described (e.g. Lima et al., 2009; Miljutin et al., 2010). Here, the Syringolaimus species of Bussau (1993) are qualified as nomina nuda since they do not conform to the Article 13 of ICZN (1999). Though these names are thus unavailable, the species of Bussau are described in details. Hence, their availability can be restored later even for the same names (ICZN, 1999). Since the species gladiatus , ingens and nitidus are fairly recognizable despite their unavailable names, I keep their dimensions here in the tables of species characters and their tail images on Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 .
