Description. Size. Length up to 1.85 mm excluding antennae, (n=4).

Colour. Completely blackish blue, with some clearer areas on head; Th II, and anterior part of Th III, Abd II and III, with some clear spots on the anterior of segment IV. Legs the same colour except tibiotarsi. Ant black. ( Fig. 5H View FIGURE 5 ).

Head. Eight eyes, G and H smaller than E and F size. Antennal length 945 μm (n=2), 3.32 times the length of the head (n=2). Ant IV with bilobed apical vesicle; relative length of Ant I/II/III/IV=1/2.3/2.1/2.5 (n=2). Sensory organ of Ant III with straight rod-like small sensilla (5 µm) in addition to the normal guard sensilla. Four labral of triangular form on each papillae ( Fig. 31A View FIGURE 31 ). Labral Mc formula: 4/554, 4 prelabral ciliated chaetae, labral chaetae smooth. Labial chaetae MREL 1 L 2 all ciliated, only with one Mc M, and R smaller than M. Labial papilla E with lateral process reaching the tip of the papilla.

Thorax and abdomen. Length ratio of Abd IV/III=4.64 (n=4). Tibiotarsus without differentiated chaetae, with exception of the smooth terminal chaetae on legs 3, characteristic for the genus. Internal edge of unguis 54 μm long. Unguis with 4 teeth; paired two between 25–31% from base and first unpaired tooth at 70 % from the base, terminal one minute; lateral teeth below the level of paired ones, dorsal tooth at same level. Unguiculus lanceolated with external lamella serrated. Tenent hair clavate, longer than internal unguis edge ( Fig. 31B View FIGURE 31 ). Trochanteral organ with 15–22 chaetae. Length of manubrium and dens 376 + 501=877 μm (n=3). Manubrial plate with 4 chaetae and 2 pseudopores. Mucro bidentate with both teeth of similar size, and with mucronal basal spine reaching the tip of the subapical tooth. Mucro 16 μm, (n=3). The length of smooth, apical part dens 30 μm.

Macrochaetotaxy. Simplified Mc formula: 3,1,0,2,1a/1,2/1,2/0,0,1/0,2,0,2,2. Head chaetotaxy ( Fig. 31C View FIGURE 31 ) Mc An 2, An 3a1 and An 3 present and with A 5 mac on A2 area. M 1 to M 4 present as Mc. In sutural row S 0, S 2, S 3, S 4i, S 4, S 5i and S 5 present; Ps 2 absent, Ps 5 present. Thoracic chaetotaxy with Th II chaetotaxy ( Fig. 31D View FIGURE 31 ) Mc m 1 present on T1; T2 area with Mc a 5 and m 4 present. Abdominal chaetotaxy, with a 2 Mc on A1 area at Abd II, m 3 and m 3e Mc present on A2 area of Abd II ( Fig. 31E View FIGURE 31 ); Abd III only m 3 on A5 area present. Abd IV ( Fig. 31F View FIGURE 31 ) with Mc A 5 –A 6 and B 3, B 5, B 6 (B 4 absent). Sensillary formula as normal for Entomobrya .

Remarks. The chaetotaxy of E. peregrina sp. nov. is similar to some forms of Entomobrya varia described below. It differs in the presence of A4 on Abd IV compared to E. varia which is absent in E. peregrina sp. nov. The labral papillae are multispinate in E. varia and triangular on the new species. The unguiculus is smooth in E. varia and serrated in the new species. The colour differs in extent and in pattern. Similar too is E. additae sp. nov. but it differs in chaetotaxy, in the form of unguiculus and its colour. A comparison of the Mc simplified formula for similar species is given below.

The species has been collected in large numbers by canopy fogging of Nothofagus trees in northern NSW. It appears to be a short-range endemic and a canopy specialist of cool temperate rainforest.

Etymology. Named for the pilgrimage town of Pamplona ( Spain) where most of this study was conducted.
