Discussion: The type species of Agaphelus Cope, 1868 is Balaena gibbosa Erxleben, 1777 , which is a composite species consisting mainly of junior synonyms of Megaptera novaeangliae . Agaphelus has been linked to Eschrichtius by the supposed inclusion of the "scrag whale of Dudley " in its synonymy. The "scrag whale of Dudley "is actually listed as " Species obscurae " just following the section on Agaphelus in Erxleben (p. 611).
