Altaba, Cristian R., 2007, A new genus and species of Enidae (Gastopoda: Pulmonata) from the Quaternary of the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean), Zootaxa 1595, pp. 43-52 : 45

Balearena gen . nov.

Type species: Balearena gymnesica sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Medium-sized enid shell, moderately thin, ovate-conic (maximum width about 2/5 length), with elongate, acute spire (roughly 1/2 total length). Apical whorls rounded with indented suture, sculpture consisting of shallow, regular collabral grooves on top, delicate spiral lines laterally. Remainder of shell covered by low, irregular collabral wrinkles. Post-embryonic whorls becoming more flattened with suture correspondingly more shallow. Aperture oval, roundly widened basally, little inclined and somewhat flaring, lip sharp, thin, slightly reflected, parietal callus joining insertions of peristome, columellar fold shallow, one blunt angular tooth sometimes present. It differs from all known enids in its overall shape, aperture traits, and unique combination of embryonic and teleoconch sculpture. Monotypic, see below.

Etymology: The name is a combination of Ena Turton,1831 type genus of the conchologically fairly uniform Enidae , and the Balearic Islands where the new genus is endemic.
