03C6879DFFE9FFD1FF054141FA90FD34.taxon	description	Lectotype (designated by Amich et al. 2004): — SPAIN. Cáceres: inter pagum Toril et fluvium Tietar [Tiétar], 10 October 1850, Willkomm s. n. (COI 00065461!; isolectotypes: BM 001134457 [image!], E 01222781 [image!], W 0332007 [image!], WAG 1785798 [image!]). Phenology: — Flowers from (April) August to October (November). Habitat: — Temporarily wet meadows and pastures dominated by Nardus stricta L., north from the Central System and in the Upper Alberche basin, or by Molinia caerulea (L.) Moench, south from the Central System, on mineral peaty soils; and banks of intermittent streams and temporary ponds with Mentha pulegium L. on siliceous soils. Co-occurring taxa include Cynosurus cristatus L., Deschampsia cespitosa (L.) P. Beauv. subsp. cespitosa, Galium verum L., Juncus effusus L. subsp. effusus, Pilosella sp., and Trifolium pratense L.	en	Fura, Inês, Covelo, Filipe, Sales, Fátima, Farminhão, João (2025): Disentangling the taxonomy of Succisella (Caprifoliaceae, Dipsacoideae) in the Iberian Peninsula: an updated synopsis and conservation priorities. 03C6879DFFE9FFD1FF054141FA90FD34.taxon	distribution	Distribution: — West-central Spain and east-central Portugal (Fig. 5): Meseta Central, in the north, on some watersheds between the Douro, the Coa and Sierras de Francia and Béjar, and in the Lower Adaja basin; in the south, on the Tiétar and Jerte basins, between Sierra de Gredos and the Tagus; also in the Central System, in the Upper Alberche basin. The elevation range is 250 – 895 (1100) m a. s. l. in the Meseta Central and Jerte Valley, and 1215 – 1495 m a. s. l. in the Central System. The chorology is SPAIN: Ávila (Av), Cáceres (Cc), Madrid (M), Salamanca (Sa), Toledo (To), Zamora (Za); PORTUGAL: Beira Alta (BA). Preliminary conservation status: — Succisella microcephala is documented by 65 herbarium collections and multiple (at least 664) observations, the most recent one made in 2024. Taken together, these records represent 47 occurrences, including 2 probably extirpated (Olmedo and Toril-Tiétar). Only 2 of the occurrences were made in official protected areas (Sierra de Gredos Regional Park and Sotos del Río Guadyerbas y Arenales del Baldío de Velada Reserve). The 45 existing occurrences represent a total of 11 subpopulations (Águeda – Coa, Huebra, Riveras de Cañeda and Sobradillo, and Adaja, in the Northern Meseta; Alto Alberche in the Central System; and Alto Tiétar-Alberche, Navamorcuende, Velada, Médio Tiétar, La Vera, Bajo Tiétar, and Jerte, in the southern foothills and adjoining plain of the Central System), and at least 30 locations with respect to the most serious plausible threat: cattle ranching intensification in Castilla y León (including within the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park), in Madrid, Extremadura and Portugal; agricultural intensification in Extremadura; and increase of drought frequency (Velada). The extent of occurrence (EOO) of S. microcephala is calculated as 26,868 km 2 (falling short of the limits for Vulnerable status under criterion B 1), whereas its area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated at 168 km 2 (within the limits for Endangered status under criterion B 2, but the number of locations is <10, and the distribution cannot be considered severely fragmented, for applying a threatened category). It is projected a continuing decline in EOO, AOO, habitat extent and quality, and mature individuals, throughout the whole range of the species, more critically in the Huebra, Alto Alberche and Jerte subpopulations. Succisella microcephala is thus assigned a preliminary risk of extinction status of Near Threatened.	en	Fura, Inês, Covelo, Filipe, Sales, Fátima, Farminhão, João (2025): Disentangling the taxonomy of Succisella (Caprifoliaceae, Dipsacoideae) in the Iberian Peninsula: an updated synopsis and conservation priorities. Phenology: — Flowers from (April) August to October (November). Habitat: — Fringe and clearings of swamp forest dominated by Salix atrocinerea Brot. Most frequently co-occurring taxa include Juncus inflexus L. subsp. inflexus, Lycopus europaeus L., Lythrum salicaria L., Mentha aquatica L., Pulicaria dysenterica (L.) 03C6879DFFE6FFD5FF054020FCACFB64.taxon	distribution	Distribution: — Central and northern Portugal (Fig. 5): coastal plain within the Lower Vouga River-Ribeiras Costeiras, and Mondego River basins, historically from Lavadores (Vila Nova de Gaia) to Covões (Coimbra). The elevation range is 0 – 50 m a. s. l. The chorology is PORTUGAL: Beira Litoral (BL), Douro Litoral (DL). Conservation status: — Succisella carvalhoana is documented by 28 herbarium collections and 41 observations, the most recent one made in 2024. Taken together, these records represent 13 occurrences, including 3 existing and 10 extirpated. Only 3 of the occurrences were made in official protected areas (Barrinha de Esmoriz and Ria de Aveiro Natura 2000 sites), where it only possibly persists at Pateira de Fermentelos. The 3 existing occurrences represent a total of 3 subpopulations (Ribeira da Horta, Pateira de Fermentelos, Covões-Cantanhede), severely fragmented due to urban and agroforestry encroachment into swamp forests, and 3 locations with respect to the most serious plausible threat, habitat degradation due to the combined effects of forestry (eucalyptus and poplar plantations) and invasive species [e. g. Acacia longifolia (Andrews) Willd., Arundo donax L., Cortaderia selloana (Schult. & Schult. f.) Asch. & Graebn.]. The largest subpopulation, in Covões, remains unprotected. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is calculated as 23 km 2 (falling within the limits for Critically Endangered status under criterion B 1), corresponding to less than 2 % of its historical EOO (1453 km 2), whereas its area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated at 16 km 2 (within the limits for Endangered status under criterion B 2). The projected loss of the Pateira de Fermentelos subpopulation, and contraction of the area of occupancy in the Covões subpopulation, is associated with a continuing decline in EOO, AOO, habitat extent and quality, and mature individuals. Succisella carvalhoana is thus assigned a preliminary risk of extinction status of Critically Endangered [CR B 1 ab (i, ii, iii, iv, v)].	en	Fura, Inês, Covelo, Filipe, Sales, Fátima, Farminhão, João (2025): Disentangling the taxonomy of Succisella (Caprifoliaceae, Dipsacoideae) in the Iberian Peninsula: an updated synopsis and conservation priorities. (BM, COI, LISE, LISI, LISU, PO). Notes: — The lectotype designated by Amich et al. (2004) cannot be accepted under Art. 8.2 of the Code (Turland et al. 2018). This specimen (COI 00014205) is a duplicate of no. 884 of the Flora lusitanica exsiccata distribution series, a mixed collection of two gatherings. Although it includes a single individual, the information on the label, exactly reproduced in the protologue, refers to two collectors, Adolpho Moller and Manuel Ferreira, to two distinct localities, Vil de Matos and São Facundo, near Coimbra, and to two collecting dates, July and August 1890. Therefore, a new lectotypification is necessary based on the single other specimen referred to in the protologue, the overlooked Carvalho s. n. (COI 00078421, Fig. 8). In the protologue, Mariz (1890) makes a footnote reference to plants collected near Coimbra (Covões) by António de Carvalho, after the memory of whom he names the species. António de Carvalho Coutinho de Vasconcelos (1827 – 1872), born in Cantanhede, was a botanist, professor at the University of Coimbra, who assembled a significant herbarium of Portuguese plants (Gomes Machado 1868; Simões de Carvalho 1872) that was already at COI at the time of the species description (Henriques 1876). We were able to locate Carvalho’s gathering (Fig. 8), which was kept separately from the remaining S. carvalhoana material as part of the Herbario da Flora de Portugal de A. de Carvalho. This explains why this specimen was not seen by previous revisors. Carvalho did not use a numbering system in the field. Numbers on the labels in Carvalho’s herbarium, such as ‘ 394 ’ of the Succisella specimen, correspond to a unique taxonomic sequence and not to a field collecting number.	en	Fura, Inês, Covelo, Filipe, Sales, Fátima, Farminhão, João (2025): Disentangling the taxonomy of Succisella (Caprifoliaceae, Dipsacoideae) in the Iberian Peninsula: an updated synopsis and conservation priorities. 03C6879DFFE2FFCBFF054790FBAEFC68.taxon	distribution	Distribution: — East-central and southeastern Spain (Fig. 5): Southern Iberian System, Serranía Baja de Cuenca; and Prebaetic System, from Sierra de Alcaraz to Sierra Seca. The elevation range is 860 – 1625 m a. s. l. The chorology is SPAIN: Albacete (Ab), Cuenca (Cu), Granada (Gr), Jaén (J). Conservation status: — Succisella andreae-molinae is documented by 33 herbarium collections and 2 observations, the most recent one was made in 2024. Taken together, these gatherings represent 19 occurrences, including one extirpated (Mesones), of which 11 were made in official protected areas (Natura 2000 sites: Sierras del Nordeste; Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas Natura; Los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima Natural Park; and Ardal y Tinjarra Microreserve). The 19 occurrences represent a total of nine subpopulations (Serranía de Cuenca, Sierra de Alcaraz, Pradomiras-Rincón de Tús, Madera, Arroyo de los Asperones, Almorchón, Nerpio, Huéscar, Sierra Seca), and at least 11 locations with respect to the most serious plausible threat, namely increase of drought frequency, trampling, and road maintenance. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is calculated as 3,308 km 2 (falling within the limits for Endangered status under criterion B 1), whereas its area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated at 80 km 2 (within the limits for Endangered status under criterion B 2). The EOO and AOO are not expected to decrease significantly considering that most occurrences are found within legally enforced protected areas, included in the Sierra de Cazorla / Segura refugium (Médail & Diadema 2009). The yearly total number of mature individuals is estimated to vary above the 1000 threshold to apply subcriterion D 1 (García Cardo & García Cardo 2023).
