Barolineocerus shares with Maynacerus Lozada, 1998 a subapical hyaline macula on the costal margin of the forewing (Fig. 8A) and with Optocerus Freytag, 1969 the diagnostic seta behind each eye. It is important to highlight that some other genera within the Chiasmodolini tribe likely possess these setae as well, but their presence has not been reported in the original descriptions of most genera. Barolineocerus differs from those genera by having a unique color pattern, resembling those of Isolineocerus Freytag, 2008 and Luteobalmus Maldonado-Capriles, 1977, characterized by yellow to green maculae on the head, pronotum, scutellum, and clavus. However, Barolineocerus differs from those genera by the dark brown to black line bordering posteriorly the yellow to green macula on the pronotum and that of clavus (Figs. 1E–G, M–N, 2G–H). Additionally, Barolineocerus can be distinguished by its male genitalia, including the presence of anterodorsal apodemes on the pygofer (Fig. 8D), subgenital plate without a median expansion in lateral view (Fig. 8F), and segment X of the anal tube with well-developed basolateral processes (Figs. 8C–D).

Species of Barolineocerus

Barolineocerus acius Freytag, 2008: 53 . Freytag (2008) provided illustrations of the male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style and aedeagus (ventral view) of B. apiculus . In some specimens, including the holotype (Fig. 1A) and female paratype, the apical yellow portion of the scutellum is discontinuous from the remaining portions of the posterolateral macula (Figs. 1A, 2B). Specimens vary in the hind tibia AD row with 6–7 cucullate setae and PD row with 13–20 cucullate setae.

Barolineocerus apiculus is most similar to B. elongatus and B. spinosus due to the claval macula extending to the scutellum apex (Fig. 2B); absence of an elongate median process on the posterior margin of the pygofer (Fig. 7C); the acute apex of the subgenital plates (Figs. 7F–G); and presence of a transverse ventral ridge on the aedeagus (Figs. 7K–M). However, it can be distinguished from these species by the straight anterior margin of the valve (Fig. 7E), pygofer anterodorsal apodeme less than half as long as pygofer (Fig. 7D) and the ventral transverse ridge present on the apical third of the aedeagal shaft (Figs. 7K–M).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D693692643FFD7FF10FF716E42FB78	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Body covered with sparse Lepidopteran scales.

Remarks. Freytag (2008) provided illustrations of the dorsal view of the head and thorax, male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style and aedeagus (ventral view), and undissected female terminalia (ventral view) of B. bispinus; and included an illustration of the male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style, and aedeagus (ventral view) of B. declivus . Upon a thorough examination of the holotypes of B. declivus (Figs. 1M–O) and B. bispinus (Figs. 1E–H), we came to conclusion they are conspecific. Freytag’s (2008) diagnostic character for B. declivus describing an aedeagus without spines at the apex is inaccurate. The holotype, in fact, exhibits a short pair of ventroapical processes, akin to those observed in the type of B. bispinus . Furthermore, Freytag (2008) in his key to species, states that both B. declivus and B. bispinus have the subgenital plate rounded at the apex, as he illustrates in his figures (Freytag 2008: Figs. 9, 15), however both holotypes have plates with short, pointed apices (as in Fig. 8F), but depending on the angle of observation one may miss this characteristic. The remaining aspects of male genitalia are indistinguishable between these two holotypes, with only minor variation noted in the shape of the basolateral processes of the anal tube. This process is slightly bent in B. declivus and straight in B. bispinus . Importantly, this same variation is observed among specimens examined from Brazil. Consequently, B. declivus is herein treated as a new synonym of B. bispinus . Specimens vary in the hind tibia AD row with 6–7 cucullate setae and PD row with 13–19 cucullate setae.

Barolineocerus bispinus is most similar to B. acius as noted in the Remarks on the latter. However, it can be distinguished from the latter by absence of the pair of ventral process on the pygofer posterior margin (Fig. 8D) and aedeagus without a dorsal median process on the aedeagal shaft (Fig. 8K).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D693692641FFD3FF10FADC6EC5FBA4	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Freytag (2008) provided illustrations of the dorsal view of the head and thorax, male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style, and aedeagus (ventral view), and undissected female terminalia (ventral view) of B. chiasmus . However, examination of the holotype indicates that his illustrations of the posterior process of the pygofer and the anal tube are slightly inaccurate. The basal 3/5 of the posterior process of the pygofer is somewhat straight, directed caudal-dorsally, then it bends posteriorly (but not at a 90º angle), and the apex is slightly curved in lateral view, posteriorly directed (Fig. 10C). In posterior view, the basal 3/5 is convergent, basal 4/5 almost parallel, and then bends again so the apical third crosses the midline, then the apices are divergent (Fig. 10D). The base of the laterobasal process of the anal tube is angulate at the anterior margin, making somewhat of a heel, the apex, posteriorly, it is pointed, but it is also angulate at the anterior margin, making somewhat of a heel (Figs. 10C–D).

Barolineocerus chiasmus shares characteristics with B. ornatus, B. chicomendesi sp. nov., B. dercyae sp. nov., and B. digitatus sp. nov., specifically in having a pair of elongate median processes on the posterior margin of the pygofer (Figs. 10C–D) and the subgenital plates rounded apically (Figs. 10F–G). Notably, B. chiasmus closely resembles B. ornatus and B. digitatus sp. nov. in having the aedeagus with a ventral transverse ridge at the apical fourth of the shaft (Figs. 10K–L). However, it differs from these species by its simple straight apex of the posterior pygofer processes (Figs. 10C–D) compared to multifurcate in B. ornatus and hook-shaped in B. digitatus sp. nov., and its unusual anal tube with laterobasal process with the base and apex angulate on the anterior margin (Figs. 10C–D).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D693692645FFCDFF10FB606DEBFB30	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Freytag (2008) mentions the presence of a ventral spine in the middle of the shaft, but we interpret this projection as a transverse ridge rather than a spine-like process (Figs. 14K–M). In addition, Freytag (op. cit.) states that the apices of the basolateral processes of the anal tube are truncate, but we interpret them as pointed (Figs. 14C–D). Some specimens collected in Brazil have the apical yellow portion of the scutellum discontinuous from the remaining portions of the posterolateral macula (as in Fig. 4D). Specimens of B. furcatus identified by P. In lateral view, the process appears rounded rather than pointed (Fig. 15L). The pointed aspect is only visible from the posterior view due to the position, orientation, and shape of the process (Fig. 15M–N). The bifurcate process on the pygofer posterior margin has both ends pointed (Fig. 15E). Freytag (2008) provided illustrations of the male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style and aedeagus (ventral view) of B. ornatus . However, based on study of the holotype, his illustrations of the median process of the pygofer and anal tube are inaccurate. In the holotype, the pygofer process is long and somewhat straight, except at the apex, where it bends ventrally; also the apex is not bifurcate, but multifurcate, somewhat asymmetrically, with the right process ending in four tooth-like processes, while the left one has three (similar to what is illustrated in Figs. 16C–E). Specimens vary in the hind tibia AD row with 5–6 cucullate setae and PD row with 12–15 cucullate setae.

Barolineocerus ornatus shares affinities with B. chiasmus, B. furcatus, B. ornatus, B. dercyae sp. nov., B. chicomendesi sp. nov., and B. digitatus sp. nov. as mentioned earlier. It is particularly similar to B. chiasmus, B. chicomendesi sp. nov., and B. digitatus sp. nov., differing in having the pygofer processes multifurcate (Figs. 16C–E).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D693692656FFC0FF10FF716DE4F905	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Freytag (2008) provided illustrations of the male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style and aedeagus (ventral view) of B. spinosus While Freytag (2008) states that ventral spines are present near the apex of the aedeagal shaft, in the studied Brazilian material, this projection is a transverse ridge rather than a spine-like process (Figs. 17L–N). In some specimens, the apical yellow portion of the scutellum is discontinuous from the remaining portions of the posterolateral macula (as in Fig. 4J). Specimens vary in the hind tibia AD row with 6–7 cucullate setae and PD row with 16–19 cucullate setae.

Barolineocerus spinosus is most similar to B. apiculus and B. elongatus as noted in the Remarks on B. apiculus . However, it can be distinguished from these species by the apodeme of abdominal sternite II not reaching the posterior margin of sternite III (Fig. 17B), pygofer posterior margin with median process projected as far as ventral one (Fig. 17D), and a preapical spine-like process on the dorsal margin of the subgenital plate (Figs. 17F–G).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D693692655FFC3FF10FF71684CFA09	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
