In a faunistic survey in several localities of the districts of Faro (Tavira, Patacão) and Santarém (Azambuja) in 2011, C. schini was not found (Zina et al. 2012). Here we report the species for the first time from south Portugal, where it is now widely distributed in the district of Faro. Also, entries in iNaturalist suggest that it is widely distributed throughout mainland Portugal, reflecting the popular use of the host as an ornamental tree in cities.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03EEAE62937C5E63FF54C789FF7B5CC4	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Hymenopteran parasitoids of three genera emerged from mummies in the laboratory: Psyllaephagus ( Encyrtidae), Pachyneuron ( Pteromalidae) and Apocharips ( Figitidae). The encyrtid is probably Psyllaephagus euphyllurae (Masi), the most important parasitoid of E. olivina in the western Mediterranean Basin (Triapitsyn et al. 2014). Triapitsyn et al. (2014) considered Pachyneuron and Apocharips to be hyperparasitoids of P. euphyllurae .

Comments. Immature E. olivina secrete white waxy flocculence resembling cotton; the secretions are usually found on the inflorescences or in the axils of small branches. The secretions by E. olivina on Olea europaea subsp. europaea and Phillyrea angustifolia appear identical.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03EEAE6293725E6DFF54C7E4FD4A5D9C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The species displays sexual dimorphism in the forewing size and shape (Figs 10, 11), and the coronal suture is reduced in basal half (Fig. 12). Strophingia australis is characterised by the paramere, the distal segment of the aedeagus and the female terminalia. The paramere, in lateral view, is lanceolate, lacks a posterior lobe and bears a small sclerotised apical tooth (Fig. 13); and the distal segment of the aedeagus bears a weakly curved, apically rounded apical dilation (Fig. 14). The female terminalia, in lateral view, are elongate (Fig. 15); the dorsal margin of the proctiger is weakly undulate and the ventral margin of the subgenital plate is angled in the middle.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03EEAE6293705E6FFF54C719FE925BC8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Rosaceae: Pyrus communis L. (Matias 1983; Aguiar & Martin 1999; Torres et al. 2014).

Comments. According to Matias (1983), C. pyri has been present in Portugal for a long time but emerged as a pest only in 1977–1978. He also suggested that C. pyrisuga is much less frequent in Portugal than C. pyri, and he drew attention to the possible occurrence of C. pyricola in Portugal. We think that the occurrence of C. bidens is more likely than that of C. pyricola . Matias (1983) described plants with symptoms associated with “pear decline”; the presence of ‘ Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri’ was, however, confirmed only much later in mainland Portugal (Marques 2011; Torres et al. 2014; CABI 2021).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03EEAE62936A5E76FF54C144FD1459AC	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. (2018), Phylloplecta trisignata groups within Bactericera . To avoid rendering Bactericera paraphyletic by keeping Phylloplecta as a separate genus, we propose here the following synonymies: Bactericera Puton, 1876, = Phylloplecta Riley, 1884, syn. nov., = Sinitrioza Yang & Li, in Li & Yang, 1984, syn. nov. These synonymies require the following new or revived combinations: Bactericera chunghsingica Lauterer, Yang & Fang, 1988, comb. rev. (from Phylloplecta) (= replacement name for Bactericera nigra Yang, 1984 nec Bactericera nigra (Crawford, 1910); secondary homonym); B. occidentalis (Tuthill, 1939) comb. nov. (from Trioza); B. rubicola (Tuthill, 1943) comb. nov. (from Trioza); B. rubisuga (Yang & Li, in Li & Yang, 1984) comb. nov. (from Sinitrioza); B. stylifera (Patch, 1912) comb. nov. (from Trioza); B. tripunctata (Fitch, 1851) comb. nov. (from Psylla); and B. trisignata (Löw, 1886) comb. rev. (from Trioza). Klimaszewski (1973) included Trioza trisignata in Bactericera, though without providing any justification. Li’s (2011) concept of Phylloplecta contains, in addition to two species associated with Rubus, two additional species developing on Euphorbiaceae and one on Amaranthaceae . The last three species are not closely related to Bactericera and are not further discussed here. Incidentally, according to Bliven’s (1955, 1956) descriptions, the Californian Choricymoza sequoiae Bliven, 1955, seems to be a synonym of P. rubicola from Washington (Hodkinson 1988). However, Bliven (1955, 1956) published his papers privately and there remains some doubt as to whether the distribution of his papers was sufficiently wide to signify ‘publication’ in the sense of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Hodkinson 1988).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03EEAE62936F5E70FF54C6A8FB925CB4	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. South of Lisbon, the maximum distance from the sea was only about 15 km. This distribution is regularly updated by the Portuguese agencies of agriculture in DGAV (2024). Now, owing to successful control by the parasitoid Tamarixia dryi (Waterston) ( Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), T. erytreae is hard to find in northern Portugal and has not been detected in the south since October 2021 (DGAV 2024; Duarte et al. 2024).

⁂ ‡ Trioza eugeniae Froggatt, 1901

(Figs 22–24, 27, 29, 30)

Material examined. Some parasitised immatures were observed (Duarte 2022) but no hymenopterans emerged for obtaining an identification.

Comments. New for Europe and Portugal. Trioza eugeniae is an Australian species that was confused with T. adventicia Tuthill, 1952 prior to the study by Taylor & Martoni (2019). The latter species, also of Australian origin, was described from New Zealand (Tuthill 1952) and has been reported from the USA (as T. eugeniae). Taylor & Martoni (2019) redescribed the two species and suggested that T. curta (Ferris & Klyver, 1932), another Myrtaceae-inhabiting species described from New Zealand, is morphologically identical to T. eugeniae but differs slightly at the molecular level. Here we list some additional characters by which T. eugeniae can be separated from T. adventicia: male proctiger massive (Fig. 27) (versus relatively slender, Fig. 28); male subgenital plate, in lateral view, subglobular (Fig. 27) (versus triangular, Fig. 28); paramere with a long slender apex (Figs 27, 29) (versus short and blunt, Figs 28, 31); proximal segment of aedeagus wide in distal three-quarters (Fig. 27) (versus narrow, Fig. 28); and distal segment of aedeagus slender apically (Fig. 30) (versus inflated, Fig. 32). The characters given here for T. eugeniae fit also the description of T. curta by Ferris & Klyver (1932), confirming the conclusion by Taylor & Martoni (2019) that the two species are morphologically almost identical.

Taylor & Martoni (2019) listed Syzygium smithii (Poir.) Nied. ( Syzygieae) (type series) and Backhousia myrtifolia Hook. & Harv. ( Backhousieae) as confirmed hosts of T. eugeniae . Here we add Melaleuca armillaris ( Myrtaceae). The three host taxa are not closely related, making T. eugeniae a widely oligophagous species, a feature also present in the closely related T. adventicia (Taylor & Martoni 2019) .

Trioza eugeniae has been observed in Portugal for about four or five years (B.Z. Duarte, G. Duarte, pers. obs.), where it was found to be always associated with Melaleuca armillaris, not inducing any galls, never with any other Myrtaceae . Melaleuca armillaris originates from Australia (New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria) and was introduced into continental Portugal as an ornamental plant.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03EEAE62936D5E7CFF54C201FC395AF0	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
