Cis chinensis Lawrence, 1991

Materials examined. Bucharest, 44.453404°N / 26.084710°E, 11.XII.2023, urban green area, Andreea-Cătălina Drăghici leg. (10 specimens), MGAB .

Collecting conditions. The specimens were collected from Polyporaceae fungi growing on a dead Acer negundo L. (Sapindacee) (Fig. 1 A, B).

Distribution. The species originates from China (Lawrence 1991), with the first record in the Northern Mariana Islands (Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade 2018) and a record from Thailand (Lawrence 2016). It has established and spread to North America (Lawrence 1991; Madenjian et al. 1993), La Reunión Island (Rose 2009), South America (Lopes-Andrade 2008) , Australia (Lawrence 2016), and South Africa (Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade 2018). It has shown great invasive capacity and is now cosmopolitan (Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade 2018). It was introduced in France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Malta, Spain, and Switzerland (Lohse & Reibnitz 1991, Lopes-Andrade 2008, Rose 2009, Reibnitz & Kunz 2011, Diéguez-Fernández 2013; Amini et al. 2016; Németh et al. 2017; Shugran et al. 2018; Ruzzier et al. 2020a; Coray et al. 2022). Romania is a new country record.

Remarks. In Europe, Cis chinensis was historically misidentified with C. multidentatus (Pic, 1917) because of their close external resemblance (Lopes-Andrade 2008); C. chinensis is almost always associated with fungi and it was widespread thanks to the commercialization of dry fungi for culinary/medical purposes (Lopes-Andrade 2008).

The species is a pest of commercial dry fungi, but it can also be found in urban areas (Lopes-Andrade 2008, Diéguez Fernández 2013; present work) and in areas with native vegetation (Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade 2018), a characteristic common to highly successful invasive species (Williamson & Fitter 1996; Rosecchi et al. 2001; Hayes & Barry 2008).

Remarks. Thought to originate from the Indian subcontinent (Edde 2012), it is now a cosmopolitan species (Borowski 2007; Nardi & Mifsud 2015) and one of the most serious pests in grain storage (Javanmard et al. 2023). The species is polyphagous on different grains, including starch-based substrates, and on wood packaging (Hendrival & Aryani 2019). In Romania, it was first recorded in 1975 (Teodorescu et al. 2006).

Collecting conditions. One specimen was caught in a Malaise trap that was set up in the “Dunele Marine de la Agigea” Nature Reserve in the proximity of Constanța harbor. The trap was close to a line of trees, where fruiting bodies of Laetiporus sulphureus (Bull.) Murrill ( Polyporaceae ) can be found, which is one of the food sources in the wild for this species (Jäch 1986). The specimen from Dumbrăveni was found at the light, in an area intensively grazed just at the edge of Dumbrăveni forest (Fig. 1C.)

Distribution. Species of Nearctic origin (Bousquet 1990), now cosmopolitan and in Europe it is currently recorded from Austria, Armenia, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine (Nikitsky 2020; Háva 2022). Romania is a new country record.

In the Palaearctic region, Mycetophagini Leach, 1815 contains 3 different genera: Eulagius Motschulsky, 1845 (with 3 species present in Europe), Litargops Reitter, 1880 (with no European species) and Litargus Erichson, 1846 (with 4 species present in Europe, of which 2 are also present in Romania: Litargus (A.) balteatus and Litargus (Litargus) connexus Geoffroy, 1785 (Háva 2022; this paper). Litargus (A.) balteatus can be differentiated immediately from the only Litargus species recorded in Romania, L. (L.) connexus , on the basis of the shape of the antennae: the last antennal segment is approximately twice as wide and truncated apically in L. (A.) balteatus , and the last antennal segment is approximately as long as wide and not truncated apically in L. (L.) connexus (Jäch 1986) .

Notably, in the World Catalog of Mycetophagidae ( Coleoptera : Tenebrionoidea) (Háva 2022), one of the synonym names of the species was wrongly spelled, namely, Litargus inflatus LeConte, 1856: 14 . The correct spelling should be Litargus infulatus LeConte, 1856: 14 , as stated in the Catalog of Palaearctic Coleoptera (Iwan et al. 2020) .

In Europe, it was recorded more than 100 years ago, when 14 specimens, misidentified as Litargus (Litargosomus) coloratus Rosenhauer, 1856 , were collected in 1907 in the UK from an unidentified fungus (Welch 2009). The most likely way of introduction of this species in Europe and other continents was by transporting commodities from North America to different harbors around the world. This hypothesis is also supported by reports of L. balteatus specimens on a Canadian cargo ship carrying wheat (Aitken 1975). In Romania, one of the specimens was collected in the proximity of Constanța harbor, suggesting international transport as a possible pathway of introduction in Romania.

Litargus balteatus is a subcortical species that can be found under the bark of deciduous trees (Bryan & Anderson 2011; Troukens 2018), where it specializes in feeding on different types of fungi that grow on decaying vegetal material (Denux & Zagatti 2010; Bryan & Anderson 2011). It has also been found on the fruiting bodies of Laetiporus sulphureus (Jäch 1986; Mifsud & Jelínek 2012), Polyporus squamosus (Welch 2009) and decaying vegetation (Zimmerman 1938; Kuschel 1990; Mifsud & Jelínek 2012). There are also reports of the species being found in animal carcasses (Kuschel 1990; Bryan & Anderson 2011) and bird nests (Kuschel 1990). It is attracted to artificial light and is likely a nocturnal species (Zimmerman 1938; Troukens 2018). In North America , the species was reported occasionally from different places used to store and process different kinds of grains, such as mills, warehouses and dwellings (Bousquet 1990).

The species is occasionally associated with different types of cereals, but it can be found only on grains stored under suboptimal conditions that favor the growth of molds (Bryan & Anderson 2011).

Remarks. Cryptogenic species first recorded in Romania in 1911 (Petri 1912), 30 years before what was reported in Denux & Zagatti (2010). Adults are scavengers, feeding on a wide range of animal- and plant-based products, including stored products (Notton 2018). It has been recorded from grain products, insect specimens and bee combs (Hinton 1941), adults in a robin's nest (Linsley 1942; Dobroscky 1925), larvae on bird guano (Hinton & Greenslade 1943), and wooden containers (Shapiro 1948). This species is rarely abundant enough to cause substantial damage (Howe & Burges 1951).

Remarks. Originating from North America , the species is now present in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Russian Caucasus, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey (Jelínek & Audisio 2007; Guéorguiev 2018; Vávra et al. 2012; Köhler 2009; Merkl et al. 2009; Tsinkevich & Solodovnikov 2014; Jelínek 2014; Spasić et al. 2011). It was also introduced in the Oriental Region and the Near East (Köhler 2009). The adults feed mostly on overripe fruits, although it has been observed as a concurrent source of damage to cultivated strawberries (Pansa et al. 2014; Ruzzier et al. 2023b). It was recorded only recently in Romania (2018) on overripe pears (Stan 2019).

Remarks. Even if the species was described on the basis of specimens collected in America , the origin of the species is probably North Africa, given that insect remains were discovered in the tomb of Tutankhamun (Retief & Nicholas 1988). In Europe, it was first recorded in France in 1848 (Runner 1919). It feeds on plant-based materials, and as its popular name suggests (cigarette beetle), it is an important pest of tobacco (Teodorescu et al. 2006); in addition, Lasioderma serricorne is a contaminant in sheds, warehouses, and living quarters (Burcea 1985; PaȘol et al. 2013). In Romania, the species is present in all regions, with a detailed distribution not given.

Hatch (1940) observed C. angustus in a flour mill in Seattle in 1939. Cynaeus angustus is considered a potential storage insect pest globally (Furui et al. 2020), and it has already been reported to cause damage to various stored grains, particularly corn (Dunkel et al. 1982). The species was recently found in Romania (Pintilioaie & Teodorescu 2021), and the current new records suggest that it already has some stable populations spread across the country.

Collecting conditions. All specimens from Dumbrăveni were collected at light in an area intensively grazed just at the edge of Dumbrăveni forest.

Distribution. Species originating in India, described in 1880 from specimens collected in Calcutta (Ando et al. 2016), currently recorded in 6 continents (Europe, Africa, North America , South America , Asia and Australia) (Bousquet et al. 2018; Iwan et al. 2020; Hilman et al. 2023; Nowosielski-Slepowron & Aryeetey 1980). In Europe, it is known from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Russia: European Territory, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Ukraine (Iwan et al. 2020), Bulgaria (Sivilov & Cvetkovska-Gorgievska 2014) and Romania (this paper). Romania is a new country record.

Notes. It resembles Tribolium beetles in general shape and feeding habits but is pale yellow, slightly shorter, and slenderer, with the head protruding well beyond the eyes (Badaw 1972).

The species was recorded in Europe at the end of the 19th century in Norway (Seebens et al. 2017). L. oryzae is well adapted to tropical storage conditions (Nowosielski-Slepowron & Aryeetey 1980) living in open rather than stored products and develops in rotten wood or under bark (Andres 1927). It is a secondary pest of cereals and oilseeds and was first recorded from Bulgaria with shipments of foods such as rice, groundnut, sorghum and maize (Atanasov 1982).

Distribution. Species of Afrotropical origin, now cosmopolitan (Rees 2007; Bousquet et al. 2018). For a detailed distribution in Europe see Iwan et al. (2020). Romania is a new country record.

Notes. Palorini Matthews, 2003 includes one other Palorus species known from Romania: P. depressus Fabricius, 1790 .

Despite many morphological differences, P. subdepressus can be confused with Tribolium spp ., closely related taxa (Buchelos 1980; Mravinac et al. 2005) or, most commonly, with P. depressus (Fabricius, 1790) (Halstead 1967) (Fig. 3 C, D). The main difference from the latter is the height of the genae (Fig. 2); P. depressus genae is slightly raised above the level of the clypeus, whereas P. subdepressus genae is more raised above the clypeus, with petaloid genae forming two small horns. The shape of the genae, i.e., forming an anterior part that is raised above and covers part of the eye, is continuous with the supraorbital carina.

The holotype of P. subdepressus was collected under camel dung from the Canary Islands in 1859 (Champion 1896). The identification of this species in Egypt, in the storage rooms of Amarna, with Sithophilus granarius (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Dryophthoridae ) (Panagiotakopulu 2001), and in the Spanish Sahara in 1943 (Louveaux et al. 2022), supports its African origin. The species was probably introduced to Europe during the prehispanic period (Henríquez-Valido et al. 2020). Excavations conducted at the Romano-British site of Alcester, Warwickshire, in 1964–1965 revealed the presence of P. subdepressus , indicating its introduction to England during the 3rd and 4th centuries AD (Osborne 1971). However, Brendell (1975) mentioned that the species is not established in the UK, not knowing whether populations have survived, or the species reintroduced, but it is widespread mainly in the tropics (Rees 2007).

Palorus subdepressus is a minor or secondary pest of stored products, mainly cereals; mycophagous (Denux & Zagatti 2010). Consumes processed plant products (Haines 1991), and those consumed previously by primary pests such as S. granarius which are also prey. The species can be found under bark, frequently in large numbers (Halstead 1967).

Collecting conditions. The specimen collected near Dobrovăț was found under the bark of a dead common beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.).

Distribution. This species originated in Africa (Bousquet et al. 2018), but it is now distributed worldwide, except Australia (Qin et al. 2023). Tribolium (T.) destructor was first recorded in Germany in 1912 (Geisthardt 1983). For a more detailed overview of the global distribution in Europe, see Iwan et al. (2020). Romania is a new country record.

Notes. T. destructor is morphologically close to T. confusum (Gorham 1991) , another Tribolium species recorded in Romania, but also molecularly (Angelini & Jockusch 2008). The two species can be differentiated on the basis of the shape of the epistoma—rounded at the eye in T. destructor , with large punctures centrally on the pronotum and in the elytral striae, pronotum widest at half-length to epistoma subangulate at the eye and small punctures in T. confusum (Gorham 1991) .

Tribolium destructor is a primary pest of stored products (Reynolds 1944). It has been found in various environments and can equally colonize anthropic and natural habitats (Linsley 1944; Gren 2003), thus facilitating its establishment (Ikin et al. 1999). The species appears to have evolved as a saprophytic insect and is known to occur naturally under the bark of trees, in dead wood, and occasionally in the nests of some Hymenoptera (Arnaud et al. 2005). The species is not known to fly (Mathlein 1943), so long-distance spread relies on human transport in grain (Ikin et al. 1999) or from shops, mills, and bakeries to homes. Howard (1987) reported that olefins are present in defensive secretions, and Hasan (2001) demonstrated that T. destructor is more radioresistant and lives longer than other Tribolium species.

This may be as economically important as other serious pests, such as T. confusum and T. castaneum (Bousquet 1990) .

Currently, it is cosmopolitan and is a storage pest with both adults and larvae feeding upon grains and grain products. Adults are occasionally predacious on other insects (Cotton & Good 1937). It usually overwinters as an adult in wooden boards and sawdust but also as a larva (Shen 1998). The species was reported in Romania by Seidlitz (1891), with the introduction of the species attributed to the importation of stored products (Teodorescu et al. 2006).

Remarks. Species with a Mediterranean distribution (Alonso-Zarazaga et al. 2023), only recently recorded in Romania, in 2022, in a single site close to Constanța harbor (Olariu et al. 2024). At the time of the discovery, the establishment of this species in Romanian fauna was uncertain due to the low number of specimens found in 2022 and 2023 (Olariu et al. 2024); thus, the finding of an additional four hibernating specimens confirms the existence of a stable population around the area of first detection. The non-native status of this taxon remains unclear until genetic analyses will help in framing this population in the respect of those from other parts of Europe (Olariu et al. 2024).

Remarks. Originally from Northeast Asia (Sasaji 1971), now cosmopolitan. Introduced in Europe as a biological control agent for pest insects, including aphids and scale insects (cf. Iperti & Bertand 2001; Cornacchia & Nardi 2012), this species has since spread and increased in number dramatically, evolving into an invasive species (Roy et al. 2006). In Romania, it was first recorded by Ruicănescu & Alexandru (2009). Currently, it is a widespread species across the country; however, there are few published records of its current distribution.
