Antennae with 10 antennomeres (Fig. 1 a, b), with four terminal antennomeres forming antennal club. Terminal maxillary palpomere securiform, apically strongly transverse (Fig. 1 c) or, rarely, weakly dilated apically. Labium with mentum subtrapezoidal, palpomeres moderately slender, apical palpomere being acuminate-cylindrical (Fig. 1 e), distance between labial palps about twice as broad as width of basal palpomere. Mandibles robust, with a subapical tooth just behind apical tooth (Fig. 1 d), incisor edge and molar tooth well developed. Prosternum “ T ” shaped, with anterior margin variable from straight to produced forming a chin piece, partially or nearly fully covering mouthparts and antennae when head is retracted (Fig. 1 f). Elytra with punctation distinctly dual, often with a row of coarse punctures near suture, rarely punctation almost uniform. Prothoracic hypomera with or without distinct anterolateral foveae (Fig. 1 f). Tarsi four-segmented, tarsal claws simple, slightly thickened basally (Fig. 1 h). Abdominal postcoxal lines usually complete, if incomplete with an additional oblique lateral line. Male genitalia with penis guide shorter than parameres, subtriangular in shape in inner view, with welldeveloped parameres; penis slender, strongly curved. Female genitalia with coxites elongate triangular; spermatheca lacking a well-differentiated nodulus and ramus, infundibulum present or absent.	en	Poorani, J., Větrovec, Jaroslav, Szawaryn, Karol (2025): A review of Indian Plotinini (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) including description of a new species. 03F94D28FF81181CE2C6848E3510FB72.taxon	distribution	Distribution. South and southeast Asia (recorded from India, China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan). Notes. The generic classification of Plotinini needs a reexamination based on morphological and molecular evidence because genera like Ballida Mulsant and Buprestodera are likely to be synonyms. At least two species of Indian Plotinini, Buprestodera inornata Miyatake and Protoplotina ambigua Poorani, appear to show extreme to moderate variations in the shape, extent of completeness, and symmetry of the abdominal postcoxal lines. As stated by Poorani et al. (2021) in the case of P. ambigua, it is highly unusual because the shape and extent of abdominal postcoxal lines in Coccinellidae are usually constant within a species though occasionally variations are found between the sexes. In most available works on Plotinini, few specimens only have been studied and it remains to be seen if this is a common feature across the tribe. Miyatake (1994) used incomplete abdominal postcoxal lines with an associate line as a diagnostic character for Protoplotina in his key to genera of Plotinini. In view of the documented variations, the generic definitions and keys based on abdominal postcoxal lines need to be modified wherever applicable. Immature stages. Immature stages (Fig. 2) are known only for Protoplotina ambigua (Poorani et al. 2021). Eggs (Fig. 2 a, b) are laid either singly or in small groups of 2 – 3 on the same substrate occupied by the host and are elongate oval, pearly white to pale yellow with a distinctly sculptured chorion (Fig. 2 b). The larva (Fig. 2 c, d) is elongate, fusiform and yellowish with short, reddish-brown spines sparsely distributed on the dorsal surface and much longer, elongate setae on the lateral sides. Pupation takes place on the leaves or other substrates on which the mealybug host is present. The pupa (Fig. 2 e, f) is of pale creamy-yellowish colour and densely setose with reddish-brown setae on the dorsal and lateral sides.	en	Poorani, J., Větrovec, Jaroslav, Szawaryn, Karol (2025): A review of Indian Plotinini (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) including description of a new species. 03F94D28FF81181CE2C6848E3510FB72.taxon	biology_ecology	Biology. Little information is available on the prey associations of Plotinini. Protoplotina spp. are known to be associated with Aphidoidea s. l. (Poorani 2003), mealybugs, diaspine scales, and whiteflies on various host plants (Poorani et al. 2021). Host plant and prey associations are well documented only for P. ambigua (Poorani et al. 2021). Omkar & Pervez (2004) listed whiteflies and scale insects as the prey of Buprestodera and Paraplotina, supposedly based on Miyatake (1969), but no specific information on the host associations of Plotinini is provided in Miyatake (1994). Genera recorded from India. Three genera, namely, Buprestodera, Paraplotina, and Protoplotina, are currently known from this region. In this study, we report a fourth genus, Plotina, for the first time, from Meghalaya, northeastern India. Plotinini are rarely collected and poorly represented in institutional collections in India.	en	Poorani, J., Větrovec, Jaroslav, Szawaryn, Karol (2025): A review of Indian Plotinini (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) including description of a new species. 03F94D28FF83181AE2C6875C350FFDEE.taxon	distribution	Distribution. Apparently endemic to South India, particularly the Western Ghats and adjoining areas. Related genera. The systematic position of Buprestodera vis-à-vis other Asian Plotinini, like Plotina and Ballida Mulsant, 1850, is unclear and problematic. Miyatake (1969) did not deal with Ballida at all but studied Palaeoeneis Crotch, 1874, considered as a synonym of Ballida by Booth & Pope (1989). He separated Buprestodera from the other genera based on characters such as anterior expansion of prosternum, extent of dilation and apical truncation of the terminal maxillary palpomere. Available illustrations of Palaeoeneis aurantiaca Crotch, 1874 and P. quichauensis Hoàng, 1982 (both species now placed in Ballida and illustrated in Hoàng 1982) indicate Buprestodera is most likely to be a synonym of Ballida. Interestingly, Ballida material at BMNH bear R. G. Booth’s labels indicating this synonymy (as “ Ballida Muls. = Palaeoeneis Crotch, Buprestodera Sicard ”), which appears to be unpublished. Another genus, Eoneda Iablokoff-Khnzorian, 1985, is also a synonym of Ballida (Booth & Pope 1989). Miyatake (1994) included Ballida in his key to the genera of Plotinini. Included species. Only two species, B. inornata Miyatake and B. mimetica Sicard, are known at present and both are sympatric. A third species distributed in the same geographic range is described and illustrated here.	en	Poorani, J., Větrovec, Jaroslav, Szawaryn, Karol (2025): A review of Indian Plotinini (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) including description of a new species. 03F94D28FF90180FE2C680F231A4FC49.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. This genus is related to Plotina and Buprestodera and seems to be placed between them. It can be separated from Plotina by the prosternum with more strongly produced anterior margin and without lateral striae extending and diverging anteriorly, and from Buprestodera by the terminal maxillary palpomere not strongly dilated apically, almost simple elytral punctation, and the more coarsely faceted eyes. The simple punctation of elytra and relatively slender and long antennae seem to be peculiar characters to separate this genus from the other genera of this group (from Miyatake 1969).	en	Poorani, J., Větrovec, Jaroslav, Szawaryn, Karol (2025): A review of Indian Plotinini (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) including description of a new species. 03F94D28FF92180AE2C6872B32B6FDCA.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Small sized beetles, almost like Scymnini in general appearance. Form elongate oval, moderately convex, dorsum with head and pronotum conspicuously pubescent, elytra with very short, suberect setae, sparse, apparent on lateral margins. Antenna 10 - segmented. Maxillary palps with terminal palpomere elongate, apical margin oblique, not greatly dilated. Basal line of pronotum inconspicuous. Lateral margins of elytra entirely visible from above. Prosternum anteriorly semicircularly produced, almost fully covering mouthparts. Prosternal process without carinae. Elytral epipleura not grooved for reception of legs in repose. Abdominal postcoxal lines usually incomplete with an associate oblique line (Miyatake 1994), extremely variable in P. ambigua Poorani (distinctly angular and complete, or incomplete, running parallel to posterior margin of ventrite 1 with an associate line). Femora moderately robust, not expanded, tibiae broadened apically. Male genitalia of known species with penis guide of tegmen distinctly shorter than parameres. Female genitalia with elongate triangular coxites, spermatheca apparently species-specific and diagnostic.	en	Poorani, J., Větrovec, Jaroslav, Szawaryn, Karol (2025): A review of Indian Plotinini (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) including description of a new species. 03F94D28FF92180AE2C6872B32B6FDCA.taxon	distribution	Distribution. India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Guam Island (Miyatake 1994; Poorani 2003; Poorani et al. 2021). Notes. All known species of Protoplotina have incomplete abdominal postcoxal lines with an associate oblique line. However, P. ambigua shows extreme variations in the shape and extent of abdominal postcoxal lines that vary from incomplete with an associate line to rarely, complete (Poorani et al. 2021). The extralimital genus Catanoplotina also has incomplete abdominal postcoxal lines but differs from Protoplotina in lacking an oblique associate line and has a compact form (Kovář 1995), that is superficially similar to Catana Chapin, 1940 (now Serangium Blackburn, 1889). Included species. Three species, Protoplotina sp. near vietnamica, P. nigrosuturalis Poorani, and P. ambigua Poorani, are known from India. Poorani et al. (2021) provided a revised key to species. Except for P. ambigua, other species were described from female specimens only.	en	Poorani, J., Větrovec, Jaroslav, Szawaryn, Karol (2025): A review of Indian Plotinini (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) including description of a new species. Head and pronotum yellowish to testaceous; elytra dark brown to paler brown, elytral pattern variable as illustrated (Fig. 15 a – d), each elytron with an ill-defined, dull reddish median macula (Fig. 15 c, d) or with a pair of transverse, narrow, yellowish bands across middle (Fig. 15 a, b), these bands sometimes medially joined to form a single transverse stripe, or often much reduced and narrow, not touching either suture or lateral margin; basal and lateral margins also paler yellowish in such examples (Fig. 16 a – d). Ventral side yellow or yellowish brown or dark brown except legs, antennae, maxillae and mouthparts lighter, yellowish. Abdominal postcoxal lines extremely variable, distinctly angular and complete (Fig. 17 g) or incomplete, running parallel to posterior margin of ventrite 1 with an associate line (Figs. 17 b, d – f), associate line shows the following variations: occasionally shorter and apically slightly curved inwards (Figs. 17 b, e) (or) short and straight, not approaching the lateral line (Fig. 17 d) (or) longer and straight, closely approaching but not touching the lateral line (Fig. 17 f); rarely abdominal postcoxal lines on either side asymmetrical and differently shaped.
