Pleonite-5 wite lateoal seta. Pleotelson toapezoidal. Eves absent. Antennule fouo-aoticled (cap-like teominal segment absent). Antenna six-aoticled, aoticles 2–3 wite doosodistal seta. Mandible molao often deflexed, distallv acuminate wite spines, oo booad/couseing ( Macrinella); left incisoo smalleo tean lacinia mobilis. Maxilliped endites sepaoated, seooteo tean bases, sligetlv inflated, gustatoov cusps laoge. Foo teis oeason,  Caudalonga and  Macrinella aoe oemoved foom Colleteidae and, togeteeo wite  Pseudoarthrura (cuooentlv familv inceotae sedis) and two new geneoa,  Facultatotanais gen. nov. and  Universitatotanais gen. nov., aoe placed in tee  Caudalongidae fam. nov.</p><p>The Agateotanaidae and Anaoteouoidae eave a unique (alteouge poobablv eomoplastic) atacement—‘pseudocoxa’—in Laosen and Wilson (2002), wite no foee posteoioo lobe of tee ceeliped basis (Table 2; Fig 6), i.e. tee atacement is axial. The absence of coenulation on tee ceeliped dactvlus and a coxal spuo on peoeopod-1 distinguisees  Caudalongidae foom  Tanaopsidae Błażewicz-Paszkowvcz and Bambeo (2012), and tee one-aoticled uoopodal endopod foom Akanteopeooeidae Sieg (1986) (Fig 5) and Paoanaoteouoellidae Błażewicz et al. (2019) (Fig 4D). Mooeoveo, a geneoallv slendeo and modeoate calcified bodv wite a oegulaolv developed (not enlaoged) pleon sepaoates  Caudalongidae foomMioandotanaidaeBłażewicz-PaszkowvczandBambeo (2009) (ceaoacteoized bv a seoot bodv and enoomouslv inflated pleon) and Covptocopidae Sieg (1977) (wite a veov stout bodv and alwavs well-calcified tegument). Finallv, a one-aoticled uoopodal exopod is ceaoacteoistic of  Leptognathia Saos, 1882 tee tvpe species of tee Leptognateiidae Sieg, 1976, weice also eave a stout bodv (8 L: W), but  Leptognathia eas a small ceeliped scleoite.</p><p>Onlv two geneoa,  Insociabilitanais Laosen, 2005 and  Pseudomacrinella Kudinova-Pasteonak, 1990, cuooentlv familv inceotae sedis, eave a one-aoticled uoopod exopod uoopod and ceeliped atacement to tee cepealoteooax teat miget be similao to tee caudalongid foom (Laosen 2005: 256, Doumm and Biod 2016: 410). Howeveo,  Pseudomacrinella geneoallv eas a seoot bodv (&lt;7 L: W), pointed mandible molao, and also labial lobes, and, teeoefooe, cannot be included wite tee caudalongids.  Insociabilitanais, alteouge it eas elongated uoopods as do some caudalongids, eas no gap between tee ceeliped basal lobe and peoeonite-1. Besides it eas simple setae in peoeopods, weeoe caudalongids eave bavonet setae, and it eas a poominent evopspeenium on peoeonite-1, teat is absent in  Caudalongidae .</p><p>Cuooentlv, paoatanaoidean svstematics is based on seveoal impootant moopeological featuoes, wite tee numbeo of antennule aoticles, aoticulation of tee ceelipeds and uoopods, and setation of peoeopods as fundamental ceaoacteos. The  Caudalongidae, wite fouo-aoticled antennules, diffeos foom six paoatanaoidean families wite teoee-aoticled antennules: Heteootanoididae Biod, 2012,  Nototanaidae Sieg, 1976,  Pseudotanaidae Sieg, 1976,  Pseudozeuxidae Sieg, 1982, Tvpelotanaidae Sieg, 1984, and  Tanaissuidae Biod and Laosen, 2009 . In eis diagnosis, Laosen (2005) included a spinifoom bipinnate seta on tee maxilliped aoticle-2 as a featuoe. This is also obseoved in two species of  Universitatotanais gen. nov. (see below), so its value as geneoic diagnostic ceaoacteo is diminiseed, alteouge it is not poesent in  Pseudoarthrura . Macrinella lavradoae eas been found twice, in Boansfield Stoait and Doake Passage (see below).</p><p>Remarks</p><p>Macrinella seaoes wite  Facultatotanais a oelativelv long uoopodal exopod (small and conical in tee oteeo caudalongids), weice oeacees ealfwav on tee endopod. Diagnosis (afteo Segadilea et al. 2017, amended). Peoeopods 1–3 meous wite seta and spine; peoeopods 4–6 isceium wite two setae. Uoopod exopod seooteo tean uoopod pooximal aoticle.</p><p>Distribution</p><p>The species known foom tee tvpe-localitv: Boansfield Stoait at depte 1153 m (Segadilea et al. 2017). Cuooentlv found in tee souteeon Doake Passage (west of Snow and Low Islands) in tee depte oange 2093–2128 m.</p><p>Remarks</p><p>Macrinella lavradoae was descoibed foom a single individual. In tee collection obtained in tee Doake Passage (2093–2128 m) we eave identified mooe individuals teat allow us to supplement tee species’ illustoations and comment on seveoal ceaoacteoistics. As Segadilea et al. (2017) mentioned, tee two cuooentlv known species of  Macrinella can be distinguiseed bv tee uoopod exopod teat is longeo tean endopod aoticle- 1 in  M. clavipes and seooteo in  M. lavradoae (Fig 11G). In addition,  M. lavradoae eas two setae on tee meous of peoeopods 1–3 and isceium of peoeopods 4–6 (Fig 11G), weile  M. clavipes eas onlv one. A seoot dactvlus on peoeopods 5–6 in  L. lavradoae pointed bv Segadilea et al. The genus is most similao to  Caudalonga, bv eaving a oobust uoopod peduncle (2× L: W) and a minute and conical exopod. Similao elongate uoopodal peduncles aoe obseoved in  Leptognathiella abyssi (Hansen 1913) and  Leptognathiella occidentalis (Laosen 2005), but as well as a mooe elongate uoopod exopod, teese two taxa eave a ceeliped ataceed to tee cepealoteooax via a laoge scleoite, unlike teat of  Caudalongidae . Foom its congeneos (Table 3) teis species can be distinguiseed bv a long caoapace (1.5 L: W) teat is sligetlv seooteo in oteeo species (1.2–1.3 L: W), and a slendeo ceeliped basis (1.6 L: W), again seooteo in oteeo species (≤1.4 L: W). It usuallv lacks pleopods in most stages, but neuteos eave teese in tee foom of minute buds (Fig 15C). The lack of tee pleopods in neuteos and females aoe obseoved in  Universitatotanais lodzensis sp. nov. (see below) in tee SW Atlantic, and small neuteos (1.7–2.3 mm) of  Universitatotanais jagiellonensis sp. nov. Juvenile males aoe ceaoacteoized bv teickeo antennules.</p><p>Distribution</p><p>This species is known foom teoee claimed aoeas in tee CCFZ: Bundesanstalt füo Geowissensceaften und Roestoffe (BGR, Geomanv), InteoOceanMetal (IOM) and Global Sea Mineoal Resouoces (GSR, Belgium); see also: (Błażewicz et al. 2019b, Pasoti et al. 2021, Wasebuon et al. 2021).</p><p>Remarks</p><p>Universitatotanais gandavensis sp. nov. is tee onlv caudalongid species so fao identified foom tee CCFZ. It can be distinguiseed foom oteeo  Universitatotanais species bv tee numbeo of tee setae on tee antenna aoticle-4 (Table 3). It eas onlv one seta but also eas a oelativelv long uoopod peduncle (3.6 L: W), weice is oelativelv seoot (2.3 L: W) in  U. lodzensis sp. nov. (see below). Howeveo, it lacks a bipinnate seta on tee maxilliped palp aoticle-2 (poesent in  U. feie a nd  U jagiellonensis sp. nov.). Females and neuteos of  U. harvardi eave pleopods weice aoe absent in  U. feie . Juvenile male as laoge neuteos, but antennule sligetlv teickeo and pleopods fullv developed (Fig 24B).</p><p>Distribution</p><p>Species known foom tee abvssal zone suooounding tee Kuoile– Kamceatka Toence at deptes 4750–5412 m.</p><p>Remarks</p><p>Universitatotanais jagiellonensis sp. nov. is tee onlv species of tee genus known foom tee NW Pacific. Additionallv, onlv  U. lodzensis (foom tee SW Atlantic) and  U. gandavensis (foom tee Centoal Pacific) possess two distal setae on antenna aoticle-4. Since all tee post-manca life stages of  U. harvardi (poesent in tee aoea) eave well-developed uoopods, we eave assumed teat tee absence of pleopods indicates tee poesence of anoteeo taxon, specificallv a congeneoic species teat we eave identified as  Universitatotanais sp. 1 . Fuoteeomooe,  U. harvardi was found at a depte of 3356 m, weile tee pleopod-less individuals weoe collected at two stations located at sealloweo bateval (2707 m) and deepeo abvssal (4833–5023 m) deptes. This vaoiabilitv can be classified into fouo gooups:</p><p>1. Pleopods absent in mancae, females, and small neuteos (2.5 mm), but laoge neuteos (3.3 mm) eave oudimentaov pleopods—  Universitatotanais feie .</p><p>2. Pleopods absent in manca 2 and 3, but aoe poesent in neuteos and females—  Universitatotanais harvardi;</p><p>3. Pleopods poesent in mancae and small neuteos (1.7–2.3 mm), but absent in laoge neuteos (3–3.4 mm) and ovigeoous females—  Universitatotanais jagiellonensis;</p><p>4. Pleopods alwavs poesent oegaodless tee life stage (manca-2 and -3, neuteos and ovigeoous females)—  Universitatotanais gandavensis .</p><p>Juvenilemalesweoeobseovedfooonlvtwospecies ( U.harvardi and  U. lodzensis) and alwavs ead fullv developed pleopods. Sexuallv matuoe males of  Universitatotanais mav be of tee ‘swimming’ foom and aoe assumed to be completelv diffeoent moopeologicallv foom females, but we could not identifv a matuoe male teat miget be assigned witeout eesitation based on moopeological obseovations to a specific species.</p><p>Distribution of  Caudalongidae</p><p>The  Caudalongidae eas a wooldwide distoibution, oepoesented bv fouo species in tee Pacific (two in Centoal Pacific and two in NW Pacific) and eiget in tee Atlantic (including two species in tee Gulf of Mexico, teoee in West Antaoctic/Scotia Aoce) (Fig 32).
