B04C87EF7674E2768CB1FB1AF4C90B24.taxon	description	Retzius proposed the name C. arenarius based on the collection made by Koenig from India Orientalis. Fischer (1932) in the article ‘ The Koenig Collection in the Lund Herbarium’ listed out the name C. arenarius in bold letters, and this implies that Koenig’s collection of C. arenariu s in Lund Herbarium is the type of C. arenarius Retz. But, in Lund Herbarium, there were two sheets of Koenig’s collection (LD 1284527 & LD 1291067). Vare (2006) designated the sheet LD 1284527 as isolectotype as part of the lectotypification of Cyperus section Arenarii. While designating the type, he selected lectotype from BM Herbarium, and there are two sheets of Koenig’s collection in the BM Herbarium too, viz. BM 000901279, which is selected as lectotype and BM 000901278 was labelled as isolectotype. While doing this lectotypification, he mentioned the sheets in LD but did not consider the explanation in the publication ‘ The Koenig Collection in the Lund Herbarium’, which ought to be considered for typification. Further, Vare (2006) failed to cite the herbarium sheet C 10010128 housed at Copenhagen Herbarium. Hence, Vare’s attempt is to be superseded and seems invalid. Hence, the second step lectotypification is being done here with LD 1284527 as lectotype, as this is the most probable sheet that might have been seen by Retzius while describing the taxon and the other sheet, viz. LD 1291067 is an isolectotype. In the sheet LD 1284527, there are three specimens mounted on and are labelled as (1), (2) and (3) (Figure 1. A), of which, the better-preserved one is the specimen mounted on the extreme left side (labelled as (1 )) and is designated here as lectotype. Further original materials are BM 000901279, BM 000901278 and C 10010128, which are to be treated as isolectotypes.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7676E2738CB1FF50F49B02AE.taxon	description	C. cinnamomeus was proposed by Retzius, and in the protologue it is written that ‘ In Caldario Horti suit, sub nomine Cyperi ligularis ’ means the specimen might have been grown in Hortus Lundensis under the name C. ligularis. There are two sheets of C. cinnamomeus Retz. housed at Lund Herbarium. The lower margin of the sheet with Retzius’ annotations in LD 1291307 was cut off. Hence, the better preserved one with annotation LD 1291367 is designated here as lectotype and LD 1291307 as isolectotype. The reverse side of LD 1291367 has the annotation “ H. L. = Hortus Lundensis ”, confirming that this specimen is linked to the Hortus Lundensis, further supporting its provenance and its designation as the lectotype.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7671E2738CB1FE74F0F101CF.taxon	description	The name Cyperus exaltatus was proposed by Retzius based on a collection by Koenig from Tranquebar. Fischer (1932) selected the Koenig collection in the Lund Herbarium (LD) as the lectotype, which should be considered as a valid lectotypification. Recently, Mallick et al. (2018) selected the same specimen as the lectotype (with a supplementary specimen in the herbaria of BM and C), which should be considered as a nomenclatural superfluous lectotypification.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7671E2738CB1FCDBF1710688.taxon	description	Retzius proposed the name C. nitens based on Koenig’s collection from Tranquebar. The name C. nitens Retz. is currently synonymised under C. pumilus L. There are six sheets from Koenig’s collections (LD 1293167, C 10010307, C 10010308, C 10010309, C 10010311 and C 10010312) housed at Lund, as well as Copenhagen Herbaria. Of these, LD 1293167 is likely the one referred to by Retzius while describing C. nitens Retz. and the sheet possesses the inscription ‘ Cyperus nitens N’. There are two specimens mounted on the same sheet and the better preserved one on the left labelled as ‘ (1) ’ (LD 1293167 (1 )) and is designated here as lectotype and further original materials are deposited at C, C 10010307, C 10010308, C 10010309, C 10010311 and C 10010312 to be treated as isolectotypes. In 1929, Fischer labelled the sheet LD 1293167 as the type of Cyperus nitens Retz. However, in 1932, while preparing his manuscript, he erroneously recorded the inscription as ‘ Cyperus cruentus N’ instead of ‘ Cyperus nitens N’ while listing the type. The sheet bearing the inscription ‘ Cyperus cruentus N’ (LD 1291667) corresponds to Cyperus sanguinolentus Vahl. To avoid any confusion arising from this misidentification, a second-step lectotypification has been carried out, reaffirming LD 1293167 as the correct lectotype of C. nitens Retz.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7671E2738CB1FA1FF4E204B6.taxon	description	The name C. setaceus was proposed by Retzius based on Koenig’s collection from Calcutta. Though Koenig’s collections, referred to by Retzius were present in Lund Herbarium, we could not trace this taxon, which demonstrates any proof of belonging to Koenig. But we could trace two potential specimens (C 10010395 & C 10010396) from Copenhagen Herbarium, and both the sheets contain inscriptions of Koenig’s name. But, the sheet C 10010396 contains many annotations and in order to avoid confusion, the sheet C 10010395 is designated here as lectotype and the sheet C 10010396 as isolectotype.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7670E2718CB1F874F6E1026A.taxon	description	Retzius proposed the name C. canaliculatus based on the collections of Koenig from India Orientalis. We could trace a single specimen LD 1291187 housed at Lund Herbarium, and this constitutes the lectotype for the name C. canaliculatus as cited by Fischer (1932) and must be considered as valid.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). Phytotaxa 712 (1): 47-58, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.712.1.4, URL: https://doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.712.1.4
B04C87EF7672E2708CB1FF50F7F0014B.taxon	description	Retzius proposed the name C. diphyllus based on the collection of Koenig from India Orientalis and the name C. diphyllus Retz. (1789: 11) is now synonymised under C. corymbosus Rottb. (1773: 42). There are four sheets of Koenig’s collections (LD 1281167, BM 000958993, BM 000958992 and C 10010130) housed at LD, BM and C, respectively. Of these, LD 1281167 is likely the one referred to by Retzius while describing C. diphyllus Retz. as it is with Koenig’s annotation and has been cited by Fischer (1932). Further, the herbarium sheet LD 1281167 is labelled as the holotype of the name of C. diphyllus by G. C. Tucker in 2005. Though the use of the term holotype is not correct, this specimen serves as the lectotype for the name C. diphyllus.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7672E2708CB1FD58F13A008E.taxon	description	Cyperus flavidus was also proposed by Retzius based on Koenig’s collections from Tranquebar. We were able to locate a possible specimen (LD 1292087) collected by Koenig from Tranquebar at the Lund Herbarium. There are two specimens mounted on the same sheet, and the better-preserved one is on the right-hand side. Further original materials are located in C, C 10010185, C 10010186 and C 10010187, which serve as isolectotypes.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7672E2708CB1FC14F781061A.taxon	description	Retzius proposed Cyperus imbricatus based on collections made by Koenig from Tranquebar. Fischer (1932) listed the name C. imbricatus in bold letters to indicate that the type specimen for the name C. imbricatus Retz. is housed at Lund Herbarium (LD 1281107). This specimen exactly matches the C 10010221 at Copenhagen Herbarium and constitutes the isolectotype. The annotations on the sheet confirm that it is Koenig’s collection. The sheet LD 1281107 at Lund Herbarium is likely the one Retzius might have referred to while describing C. imbricatus, as all other specimens on which he made descriptions were housed at Lund.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). Phytotaxa 712 (1): 47-58, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.712.1.4, URL: https://doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.712.1.4
B04C87EF7672E2708CB1FAA8F7350412.taxon	description	Retzius proposed Cyperus leucocephalus, based on the collections of Koenig from Chandrankonae (Now Chandrakona), in West Bengal. Fischer (1932) listed the name C. leucocephalus in bold letters to indicate that the type specimen for the name C. leucocephalus Retz. is housed at Lund Herbarium. Lund Herbarium harbours only a single sheet, but in Copenhagen Herbarium (C), there is a sheet under the name Scirpus coronarius Vahl, which is in congruence with the sheet of C. leucocephalus in Lund Herbarium, from the same locality. In support, Kern (1953) also made a label on both sheets that these sheets matched with each other. The specimen preserved in the sheet LD 1292687 might be the one Retzius referred to while describing C. leucocephalus Retz. and constitute the lectotype as designated by Fischer (1932). There are four specimens mounted on the same sheet LD 1292687, of which the better-preserved one is on the extreme left side of the sheet.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF7672E27F8CB1F890F4D1026B.taxon	description	Cyperus niveus was proposed based on Koenig’s collections from Chandrakona (formerly Chandrankona), in West Bengal. Fischer (1932) listed the name C. niveus and indicated that the type specimen for the name C. niveus Retz. is housed at Lund Herbarium. The Lund Herbarium contains only a single sheet of this species, but another sheet (C 10010264) exists in the Copenhagen Herbarium labelled as Cyperus niveus Retz., which matches the C. niveus sheet in the Lund Herbarium and is from the same locality. The sheet LD 1293287 is likely the one referred to by Retzius while describing C. niveus, and there are two specimens mounted on this sheet, of which the specimen on the left side is better preserved one.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF767CE27E8CB1FBA4F105067E.taxon	materials_examined	Holotype: — CHINA.: China, s. d., Osbeck, s. n., (LD, LD 1291427, digital image!). Cyperus compactus was initially proposed by Retzius based on Osbeck’s collections from China. In the original description, he mentioned ‘ E China allatum communicavit Rev. D. D. Oscbeck’. We were able to locate only one specimen (LD 1291427) collected by Osbeck from China at the Lund Herbarium. The reverse side of this sheet is labelled with “ Osbeck ” and “ China ”. Hence, the specimen LD 1291427 is the holotype.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF767CE27E8CB1FF50F4C902FA.taxon	description	Retzius proposed the name C. racemosus based on Koenig’s collections from India Orientalis. We could trace a single specimen LD 1299167 housed at Lund Herbarium, which was cited by Fischer (1932) as the type material for the name C. racemosus.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae). B04C87EF767CE27E8CB1FDC8F06D00D6.taxon	description	C. stoloniferus was first proposed by Retzius based on the collections of Koenig from Tranquebar. We could trace out two specimens of C. stoloniferus Retz. from Koenig’s collections at Lund Herbarium (LD 1293047 and LD 1299527) and two at Copenhagen Herbarium (C 10100336 and C 10100337). The sheets housed at Lund Herbarium might be the ones directly referred to by Retzius to describe C. stoloniferus Retz., and on the reverse side of the sheet LD 1293047, it is written that ‘ Cyperus rotundus Kon’ means Koenig fetched the specimen and the sheet is of C. rotundus L. But, the critical examination of the specimen revealed that the specimen is that of C. stoloniferus. The sheet LD 1299527 possesses the inscription ‘ Cyperus stoloniferus N. Konig’. Further, Fischer wrote “ Type ” over the sheet, and in his publication (1932), he mentioned the inscription, and this constitutes an effective and valid lectotypification. The sheet LD 1293047 and other original materials found in C, C 10100336, and C 10100337 constitute isolectotypes.	en	Muhsina, Abdul Azeez, Maya, Chandrasekharan Nair (2025): Nomenclatural notes and typification of Retzius names in the genus Cyperus (Cyperaceae).
