Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by McClelland (1842) as Gobio limnophilus; treated by Coad (1981: 10) as a synonym of Cirrhinus reba . —Afghanistan materials: None.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River.—General distribution: Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.—Habitat: This species inhabits clear rivers and tanks. A plankton and detritus feeder. Breeding takes place in flooded shallows in june-september. Freshwater.
