Taxonomy. Original description: Cyprinus gotyla Gray, 1830: no page number, pl. 88, fig. 3 [Sikkim, Tista (Teesta) River at Rangpo, 27°10’43”N, 88°32’10”E, India (original locality: Mountain stream, northern India); neotype: MUMF 4300; neotype designated by Nebeshwar & Vishwanath (2013: 115)].— Afghanistan synonyms: None.—Revisions: Nebeshwar & Vishwanath (2013: 110).—Illustration: Nebeshwar & Vishwanath (2013: 112, fig. 7).

Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Coad (1981: 10); confirmed by Coad (2014: 163; 2015: 228).—Afghanistan materials: CMN.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Triburaties flows to Zhob River.—General distribution: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bhutan.—Habitat: This species is found in fast-flowing streams with boulders and rocks along the Himalayan ranges. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Locally consumed, but of no commercial importance.

Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC (Rayamajhi & Jha 2010).—Threats: CON, HAB, COM, EUT.—Moderate sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.— Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
