(For the complete synonymy of the genus, see Richer de Forges 2010: 646).
Remarks. There are currently 31 recognised species in this genus (Richer de Forges & Ng 2009a, b; Richer de Forges 2010; Richer de Forges & Corbari 2012; Lee et al. 2015, 2017). Garth (1958) synonymised the Indo-West Pacific genus Oxypleurodon Miers, 1885, under Sphenocarcinus A. Milne-Edwards, 1878, following Alcock (1895, 1899). Sphenocarcinus was then synonymised under Rochinia A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, by Griffin & Tranter (1986). Subsequently, Tavares (1991) resurrected the genera, Oxypleurodon and Sphenocarcinus (see Lee et al. 2015; Tavares & Santana 2018), and established a new genus for species with a very elongated pseudorostral spine, Nasutocarcinus Tavares, 1991 . Richer de Forges & Ng (2009b) reviewed the taxonomy of both genera, noting that Oxypleurodon is quite distinct from Rochinia, and synonymised Nasutocarcinus under Oxypleurodon (see also Lee et al. 2015). With the description of two new species from PNG, there are now 33 species in Oxypleurodon .
