Type locality. Quail Island, Lyttelton, New Zealand .

Variation. Not significant.

Diagnosis. Gnathopod 1 propodus subtriangular with well-developed posterodistal lobe. Gnathopod 2 propodus palm with midpalmar sinus. Pereopod 7 sexually dimorphic, merus broad (subtriangular), carpus expanded (subrectangular). Epimeron 3 posterior margin minutely serrate, posterior corner subquadrate. Uropod 2 endopod with marginal robust setae in one row.

Size. 11 to 23 mm.

Remarks. Hurley (1957) placed O. serrulata as a junior synonym of Orchestia chiliensis Milne Edwards, 1840, however the species was reinstated by Serejo & Lowry, 2008 which re-established T. serrulata as endemic to New Zealand, with O. chiliensis distribution again restricted to the South American coastline. The material from the Discovery Expedition identified by Alfred O. Walker was re-examined here in and identified as Orchestia aucklandiae .
