Genus Cabira Webster, 1879

Type species. Cabira incerta Webster, 1879, by monotypy.

Remarks. Webster (1879) referred Cabira as “ incertae sedis ” in the genus description. Hartman (1947) classified Cabira as Pilargidae but indicated the need for a revision of the genus because of the limited diagnostic characters used in its original description in addition to the loss of the holotype. Pettibone (1966) redescribed and established neotypes for C. incerta . A phylogenetic study indicates the presence of jaws as a synapomorphy of the genus (Licher & Westheide 1994), a character previously observed by Britaev & Saphronova (1981). However, instead of jaws, only denticles and papillae may be present on the anterior extremity of the proboscis of some species of Cabira (Mandal et al. 2007) .
