TYPE SPECIES: Phloeomys schadenbergi Meyer, 1895 .

COMMENTS: Reviewed by Musser and Gordon (1981) and Musser et al. (1985). A Philippine Old Endemic in the same monophyletic group as Batomys and Carpomys (Musser and Heaney, 1992) . Except for a suggested but distant phylogenetic link to Phloeomys that has to be further tested (Musser and Heaney, 1992), no data supports inclusion of Crateromys in the Phloeomyinae along with Coryphomys, Lenomys, Pogonomys, Chiropodomys, and Mallomys, as Simpson (1945) indicated. An undescribed species related to C. schadenbergi was recorded from Panay Isl (Musser and Heaney, 1992); real distribution in the archipelago and actual number of species in the genus have yet to be determined.
