Spilogale interrupta Rafinesque, 1820
Plains Spotted Skunk
Records of Spilogale interrupta are restricted to extreme southwestern Louisiana in Cameron and Calcasieu parishes. Lowery (1974) regarded all spotted skunks as S. putorius, however recent molecular evidence clearly showed that specimens west of the Mississippi River in Louisiana belong to S. interrupta (McDonough et al. 2022) . The authors indicated that the Mississippi River serves as a barrier to gene flow between the two species. No new parish records of S. interrupta have been reported since Lowery (1974).
