Bromeloecia coniclunis Yau and Marshall sp. n.

(Figs. 19.1–19.16)

Description: Body length 1.2–1.8 mm (males), 1.3–2.2 mm (females).

Head: Flagellomere 1 with 2–3 very small circular pits on basal outer edge. Genal height 0.5x eye height; gena with 6 – 7 setulae at genal margin and anteroventral corner.

Wing: Angle between costa and R4+5 75°. Distance between radial fork and r-m 2.8x length of r-m; dm-cu subequal to length of r-m and distance between crossveins slightly shorter than length of dm-cu. M-pseudovein slightly bent towards costa, bent posteriorly but remained anterior to basal portion in distal half and ending very close to wing margin.

WIPs: Basal angle of distal spot wide, 95°; posterior edge curved posteriorly or slightly elbowed at distal half.

Legs: Fore femur ventrally with 1 large ventrobasal seta and distal to it, 2 close rows of strong offset setae, usually a total of 5–7, posteroventrally with a row of 4–5 strong setae on distal one third of femur, second last seta strong; female with 1 large ventrobasal seta and a continuous row of 8–9 posteroventral setae along length of femur, second last seta strong. Male fore tibia anteroventrally with a comb of 16–17 small stout setae on distal three quarters; comb absent in females.

Male abdomen and terminalia: S5 medially with some desclerotization, setae at edge of desclerotization directed posteromedially. Anteroventral arm of synsternite 6+7 posteromedially with a row of microtrichia, apex tapering and curled. Both left and right anteroventral processes of epandrium articulating with lateral extension plate of hypandrium. Subanal plate cone-shaped with a pair of strong setae. Subepandrial sclerite medially rectangular plate-like with thin lateral arms. Cerci straight and converging. Surstylus quadrate and wraps around cercus anteriorly; anteroventral surface covered with setae.

Hypandrium with lateral extension plate starting from distal half of posteromedial hypandrial process; outer margin of extension plate articulating with slender hypandrial arms. Phallapodeme simple rod-like. Ejaculatory apodeme and bulb not observed. Distiphallus FDS slender, apically tapered; SDS thin, medially desclerotized; MS olive-shaped, distally with 3 leaves of membrane.

Female abdomen and terminalia: Each half of T8 shaped as an isosceles triangle. S8 wide, bell-shaped. Epiproct glossy on lateral thirds. Cercus diamond-shaped. Each spermatheca with large apical thimble-shaped pit and 4 small basal pits.

Etymology: This name refers to the cone-shaped subanal plate (Latin ‘coniculus’: cone-like, conical; Latin ‘clunis’: buttocks, rump).

Comments: B. coniclunis is a high-elevation, Andean species, ranging from Venezuela to Bolivia. Males can be easily recognized by the conical subanal plate.
