Subgroup niponensis (Haan, 1843)
Member of this species group are characterized by wide tegmina, long files and wide mirrors compared to the confracta subgroup (Fig. 1), and have long-lasting, trill-like songs (see measurements in Liu Cx et al. 2020). In the song of many species regular changes between soft and loud parts are observed. Typical members are M. niponensis, M. fallax and M. himalaya . However, in morphology species of the minor subgroup (see below) are quite similar and can at present be separated only by the beginning of the song or by genetics (Liu et al. in prep).
