Palearctic: 1) China (north), 2) Japan (except the Ryukyu Islands) (Yamaguti et al. 1971, Takada et al. 1998, Chen et al. 2010, Iwakami et al. 2014, Zhao et al. 2021).

Camicas et al. (1998) listed Haemaphysalis megaspinosa as an Oriental and Palearctic species, but no Oriental localities have been found for this species.

Takano et al. (2014) found that sequences of the 16S rDNA gene from Japanese populations of Haemaphysalis megaspinosa and Haemaphysalis japonica are similar and therefore unsuitable for separating these species.
