Taxonomy: Type specimens of Xyleborus kraunhiae could not be located in the NIAES collection so our observations were based on Niisima’s description. The morphology of the species described by Niisima is unambiguously that of Xyleborinus schaufussi except the size is given as 2.20 mm. This is smaller than the size of other specimens (NMNH, MSUC, RAB), which range between 2.30¯2.50 mm, and smaller than that reported for X. schaufussi of 2.40¯3.00 mm by Niisima (1910). Despite this slight size discrepancy, we are confident that these two species are the same and Xyleborus kraunhiae is here placed in synonymy.
