Spongihalacarus longiscutatus Otto, 2000

Report associated with sponges: This species was extracted from "sponge weed" (a symbiosis between the red alga, Ceratodictyon spongiosum Zanardini, 1878 and the sponge, Haliclona cymaeformis), collected at a depth of 1 m from Great Keppel Island (Great Barrier Reef lagoon, north-eastern Australia) (Otto 2000b).

Remarks: A new subfamily, Spongihalacarinae was also established to incorporate this single genus (Otto 2000b).
