(3) Meisch et al. (2019a) followed Martens & Behen (1994) in considering Cypricercus episphaena a synonym of C. acanthigera . However, this decision involved only the American specimens identified as C. episphaena by Tressler (1950), and which in fact belong in C. acanthigera, not the African species named by G.W. Müller (1908).

The original C. episphaena

was re-instated as a valid species by Almeida et al. (2021a) and this decision is followed here.
