Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina, Florida), Gulf of Mexico, and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo) (Rathbun 1898, 1937; Williams et al. 1968; Powers 1977; Williams 1984; Soto 1985; Abele & Kim 1986; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1986; Melo et al. 1998; Nizinski 2003; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. This species was previously recorded to São Paulo state but the location was not mentioned (Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1986). Specimens found from 40 to 400m (Melo 1996), and in the literature available the number of individuals captured is low.
