Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Delaware to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, and Brazil (Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo) (Barreto et al. 1993; Melo 1996, 1998; Mantelatto et al. 2004b; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba (Mantelatto et al. 2004b; Alves et al. 2012b; 2013b; Assugeni et al. 2017) and Ilha Vitória (Alves et al. 2012a). This species was included in the genus Damithrax (Windsor & Felder 2014) that was posteriorly invalidated and M. hispidus was back assigned to Mithrax (Windsor & Felder 2017) .
