Diagnosis. Shield longer than broad, with scattered tufts of setae. Chelipeds strong, left larger than right, covered with ciliated tuberculate striae, arranged in parallel way; cutting edges of fingers with strong white teeth with dark tip. Ambulatory legs (first and second) strong, with similar striated pattern of chelipeds.
Distribution. Western Atlantic—from North Carolina to Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Antilles and Brazil (from Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay and Argentina.
Remarks. Dardanus insignis can be easily distinguished from other species of the genus (occurring in Brazil) by the presence of granular striations with fringes of bristles, mainly on the chelipeds.
