Species of Melittia are characterized by the following characters: Veins R4 and R5 stalked of forewing; Cu1 arising well before crossvein of hindwing; hind tibia and tarsus strongly tufted. Male genitalia: valve usually ovoid, elongate, dorsoapical and ventroapicaI part densely covered with simple hairs; tegumen and uncus broad, uncus bilobed apically; saccus and aedeagus relatively long. Female genitalia: antrum short with annular sclerotization; ductus bursae long; corpus bursae with complicated signum.
