Identification. Small individuals; head width 0.56 mm or less; hairs on disc of gaster closely appressed and mostly separated by more than their own lengths; and median basal groove of gaster short and usually indis- tinct (Snelling and Longino 1992).

Distribution. Cyphomyrmex minutus is one of the most widely distributed species of fungus-growing ants. It has been recorded from southern United States of America (Arizona, Texas, and Florida) all the way south to Ar- gentina (Misiones) (Snelling and Longino 1992; Deyrup 2003, 2016; Fernández and Sendoya 2004; Salinas 2010; Demétrio et al. 2017). It is possible that C. minutus is a complex of cryptic species, but this hypothesis needs to be tested with a comprehensive sampling of populations from across the Americas.
