Fusus longissimus (Gmelin, 1791)
1791 Murex longissimus Gmelin: 3556, no. 116
1822 Fusus longissimus Lamarck: 122, sp. no. 2
1832 Fusus longissimus (Lamarck) Deshayes: 148
1840a Kiener: 3, pl. 2, fig. 1
Material in MHNG, Lamarck collection: possibly Lamarck’s original specimen MHNG INVE 51704 (ex MHNG 1098/6), 26 cm. The size of 9 pouces 3 à 4 lignes indicated by Lamarck is greater than 25 cm and it does not agree with Kiener’s illustration. Locality on the label: Océan Indien .
Remarks: According to Rosalie de Lamarck, her father’s collection contained a single specimen. Two other specimens of about 22 cm are in the Delessert collection, but neither of them seems to have been figured by Kiener.
Current taxonomic position: Fusinus longissimus (Gmelin, 1791); placed in Fusinus by Springsteen and Leobrera (1986): 176. Locality is Indo – Pacific. Lamarck (1822) did not recognize the priority of Gmelin’s name but did list the synonymy of Murex candidus Gmelin, a species subsequently placed in synonymy with Fusinus longissimus (Gmelin) by Tryon (1880): 56.
