1816 Fusus morio var. Lamarck: 7, pl. 430, fig. 3b (erroneously stated as fig. 4b in Lamarck’s caption) (= var. b of Fusus coronatus as described in Lamarck, 1822)

1822 Fusus coronatus Lamarck: 127, sp. no. 17

1832 Fusus morio (Lamarck) Deshayes: 155

Type locality: l’Océan des Antilles .

Material in MHNG, Lamarck collection: 3 small specimens of the variety b (minor) MHNG INVE 51722 (ex MHNG 1098/24) (figured herein, Fig. 16A – B, Fig. 17A); 1098/24/1: 47.2 mm; 1098/24/2: 41 mm; 1098/24/3: 34.5 mm . 1 larger specimen, but also of the variety b, MHNG INVE 51723 (ex MHNG 1098/25) (figured herein, Fig. 17B), 58.8 mm (is the specimen figured in (1816): pl. 430, fig. 3b) . No locality is given on the label of specimens 51722; specimen 51723: Afrique occidentale.

Remarks: The specimen MHNG INVE 51723 (ex MHNG 1098/25) is the variety b (or minor) figured by Lamarck by (1816) pl. 430, fig. 3b. According to Rosalie de Lamarck, her father’s collection contained three specimens. However, the specimen(s) of the main species (not the variety b) was or were not found. The three small specimens MHNG INVE 51722 probably also represent the variety minor, but at least two of them, if not all three, are not Lamarck’s original specimens.

Current taxonomic position: Pugilina morio (Linnaeus, 1758); placed in synonymy with Pugilina morio [ Melongenidae], type species of Pugilina Schumacher, 1817 by Gray (1854): 30. Locality is Senegal and the Antilles.
