Fusus tuberculatus Lamarck, 1822
(Figure 11)
1816 Fusus colus Lamarck: 6, pl. 424, fig. 4
1822 Fusus tuberculatus Lamarck: 123, sp. no. 4
1832 Fusus tuberculatus (Lamarck) Deshayes: 149
1840a Kiener: 9, pl. 7, fig. 1
Type locality: l’Océan des Grandes Indes .
Material in MHNG, Lamarck collection: 2 syntypes MHNG INVE 51707 (ex MHNG 1098/9) (figured herein, Fig. 11A – B); 1098/9/1: 120 mm; 1098/9/2: 111.3 mm. One probable syntype MHNG INVE 51706 (ex MHNG 1098/8) (figured herein, Fig. 11C), 128.5 mm. Locality on the label: Océan Indien.
Remarks: According to Rosalie de Lamarck, her father’s collection contained three specimens. G. Mermod (former curator of molluscs at MHNG) noted that the specimen 1098/9/1 is the one figured in the Tableau, while it is difficult to say which one of these three was figured by Kiener. We have some doubts as to whether 1098/9/1 is the figured specimen since the size does not quite match. On the other hand, specimen 1098/9/2 bears a faded handwritten inscription by Lamarck inside its aperture, and thus is surely one of his original specimens.
Current taxonomic position: Fusinus tuberculatus (Lamarck, 1822); placed in Fusinus by Melvill (1928): 107. Unnecessarily renamed Fusus maculiferus by Tapparone - Canefri (1875). Locality is east Africa.
