Pseudomurex meyendorffi var. caprensis Bellini, 1929a: 38
Type locality: Capri Island (Naples, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) .
Original description: “la forma di Capri, non rara a profondità, è corta, rigonfia e differisce da quella non solo tipica, ma di altre località mediterranee” [the variety from Capri—of Coralliophila meyendorffii (Calcara, 1845), reported as Pseudomurex meyendorffi Calcara —, not rare at depths, is short and swollen, and differs from both the typical shells and the ones from other Mediterranean localities].
Remarks: having been instituted as a geographic race, we rank it subspecific, and thus available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10, glossary). Listed as a simple variety or a synonym of Coralliophila meyendorffii (Calcara, 1845) by several authors (Sabelli et al. 1992; Fasulo 2012), despite no figures ever being published by Bellini (1929a). Spano et al. (2002) listed it as a valid species, “ C [oralliophila] caprensis ”, but with no further comment or description. The original description may easily fit other Mediterranean taxa than C. meyendorffii, the closer ones being Coralliophila brevis (Blainville, 1832) and Coralliophila panormitana (Monterosato, 1869) due to original description and declared depth. Thus, it is considered a nomen dubium (ICZN 2012: glossary).
