Limnaea truncatula var. neapolitana Bellini, 1904d: 38
Type locality: Sebeto river (Naples, Italy) .
Original description: “shell smaller and less lofty; ovoid aperture; yellowish color”—with respect to Galba truncatula (Müller, 1774), reported as Limnaea truncatula Müller.
Remarks: having been instituted as a geographic race, we rank it subspecific, and thus available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10, glossary). Hubendick (1951) and Alzona (1971) listed “ neapolitana Bellini, 1904 ” as a synonym of Galba truncatula (Müller, 1774), and the same holds for Fasulo (2013), who considered Limnaea truncatula var. neapolitana Bellini, 1904 as a synonym of G. truncatula . This taxon was never figured by Bellini (1904d, 1908a, 1915); however, taking into account the absence of congeneric and/or similar species from the Naples area (Welter-Schultes 2012), as well as the fact that it is generally a very common species, we are prone to accept that it was truly described as based on G. truncatula . This taxon was not found during samplings held in the area in the 1980’s (Battaglini & Valentino 1981 –1982), and therefore it presumably did not survive the anthropogenic changes to which the Sebeto River has been subjected in the last century.
