4.1. Myrceugenia hamoniana (Mattos) Sobral, comb. nov.
Basionym: Eugenia hamoniana Mattos, Loefgrenia 12:1. 1963 (type: Brasil, Santa Catarina, Hamonia, Lüderwalt 1750, holotype SP).
= Myrceugenia smithii Landrum, Brittonia 32: 374. 1980 (type: Brasil, Santa Catarina, Indaial (Apiúna), Smith & Reitz 12411; holotype HBR, isotype RB).
Mattos (1993), considers Eugenia hamoniana as a synonym of Eugenia sprengelii DC, but E. sprengelii presents markedly racemiform inflorescences with 2-4 glabrous flowers, while E. hamoniana bears solitary axillary flowers that are pilose at least at the ovaries. The leaves in E. sprengelii are not mucronate, while they are so in E. hamoniana . Such differences do not corroborate Mattos' decision of considering both species synonyms. Additionally, Hamonia, the type locality of E. hamoniana, is presently known as Ibirama (Seyferth 1999), a municipality colse to Indaial (IBGE 2010), where the type of M. smithii was collected; E. sprengelii, as far as known, is only known from the state of Rio de Janeiro.
