Type Locality: Calcutta (Kolkata) (22.5726°N, 88.3639°E), India
Distribution in Nepal: Bagmati Province, Kavrepalanchowk District, Chandeswari River, Banepa; Koshi Province, Taplejung District, Maewa Khola, Sanghu (1980 m asl) (Sims 1963; Nesemann et al. 2007).
Distribution elsewhere: Bahamas, China, Cuba, Florida, Guiana, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malay Peninsula, North America, Pakistan, Salvador, Sri-Lanka, Sierra Leone, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates (Shen et al. 2005; Mandal et al. 2010; Reynolds & Reynolds 2010; Pavlíèek & Csuzdi 2012; Chang et al. 2016).
Habitat: Bamboo, grass, lakes, mud, marshy areas, ponds, rainforest, river, soils, streams, tanks, wells (Sims 1963; Gates 1972).
Ecology: Epi-endogeic (Ahmad et al. 2024).
Remarks: Collected by K.H. Hyatt in 1961 from Chandeswari River Banepa Kavreplanchcok, Maewa Khola, Sanghu, Taplejung, Nepal (Sims 1963). Sims (1963) considered Pheretima campanulata and Metaphire houlleti as two distinct species, however, Gates (1972) and Ahmed et al. (2020) regarded Pheretima campanulata as a synonym of Metaphire houlleti .
