Centaurea cyanus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 911. 1753.

"Habitat inter Europae segetes biennes." RCN: 6592.

Lectotype (Wagenitz in Rechinger, Fl. Iranica 139b: 418. 1980): Herb. Linn. No. 1030.16 (LINN) .

Current name: Cyanus segetum Hill ( Asteraceae).

Note: Jeffrey (in Kew Bull. 22: 137. 1968) designated material ( “200”) in the Clifford herbarium (BM) as lectotype, but there are three sheets associated with species number 20 (Herb. Clifford: 422, Centaurea 20 [2 sheets] and 20 δ - 1 sheet). They are not part of a single gathering so Art. 9.15 does not apply, and Wagenitz’s appears to be the first explicit type choice.
