Clypeola campestris Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 652. 1753.
"Habitat in Gallia." RCN: 4736.
Basionym of: Alyssum campestre (L.) L. (1759) .
Neotype (Polatschek in Cafferty & Jarvis in Taxon 51: 532. 2002): France. Montpellier, Herb. Endl. Alyssum calycinum, Endlicher s.n. (W) .
Current name: Alyssum alyssoides (L.) L. ( Brassicaceae).
Note: Dudley (in J. Arnold Arbor. 45: 64. 1964) regarded Sauvages’ description itself as the basis of the basionym but this would be contrary to Art. 8.1. Alyssum campestre L., Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 909 (1763) is evidently not the same taxon as A. campestre (L.) L. (1759), and this has caused confusion leading to " A. campestre " being informally rejected as ambiguous by some authors (e.g. Turrill in J. Bot. 73: 261. 1935; Botschantzev in Novosti Sist. Vyssh. Rast. 15: 150-151. 1985). In the absence of original material, Polatschek designated a neotype, confirming the position of A. campestre (1759) as a synonym of A. alyssoides, in agreement with the treatment of Dudley.
