Celosia cristata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 205. 1753.

"Habitat in Asia." RCN: 1663.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Clifford: 43, Celosia 2: 7 sheets (BM) ; Herb. Linn. No. 288.6? (LINN); [icon] in Mattioli, Pl. Epit.: 792. 1586.

Current name: Celosia argentea L. ( Amaranthaceae).

Note: Townsend (in Nasir & Ali, Fl. W. Pakistani 71: 5. 1974) indicated 288.4 (LINN) as the holotype but this sheet lacks the Species Plantarum number (i.e. “2”) and is a post-1753 addition to the collection and not original material for the name. Smith (Fl Vitiensis Nova 2: 285. 1981) stated that the Clifford reference "suggests the suitable lectotype ", but there are seven sheets (evidently not from a single gathering) associated with this name in the Clifford herbarium, so this is not an effective choice.
