Conyza bifrons Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 861. 1753.
"Habitat in Pyrenaeis, Canada." RCN: 6224.
Lectotype (Pruski in Sida 21: 2032. 2005): Herb. Clifford: 405, Conyza 3 (BM-000647043) .
Current name: Inula bifrons L. ( Asteraceae).
Note: Although some authors have assumed that Linnaeus (Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1236. 1763) subsequently transferred C. bifrons to Inula, restricting it to the European taxon, it seems clear that this was not the case. On p. 1207 of the same work, Linnaeus also treated C. bifrons, with the same diagnosis as in 1753 but with only the previously cited Plukenet polynomial in synonymy. The Hermann reference was transferred to the synonymy of I. bifrons, along with three new synonyms. Inula bifrons is evidently a new name in Inula for the European plant (albeit with the same epithet), and not a new combination in Inula of Conyza bifrons . See notes by Godfrey (in J. Elisha Mitchell Sci. Soc. 68: 264. 1952).
