Croton argenteus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1004. 1753.

"Habitat in America." RCN: 7274.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 391.9 (S); Herb. Clifford: 444, Croton 2 (BM) ; Herb. Linn. No. 1140.8 (LINN) .

Current name: Croton argenteus L. ( Euphorbiaceae).

Note: Specific epithet spelled “argenteum” in the protologue.

Webster & Huft (in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 75: 1124. 1988) indicated possible type material in the Clifford and LINN herbaria. Subsequently, Webster (in Contr. Univ. Michigan Herb. 23: 372. 2001) indicated the Clifford material as the holotype, but this choice was published after 1 Jan 2001, so the omission of the phrase "designated here" or an equivalent (Art. 7.11) means that this choice is not effective.
